Holy Family Thanksgiving Food Drive & Corporal Works of Mercy - Or Finding Grace in a Box of Stuffing!!

The generosity and support of the Holy Family School Community is regularly visible and on display in our school and the events supported on many levels.

We are in the middle of the annual Thanksgiving Drive. The attached information guides our school wide giving of target foods which will enable us to best serve the needs of others. The organization of Ms. Arena, the dedication of so many staff helping, and the outpouring of donations from the school are beacons of light!

As a Catholic School, we sometimes miss the opportunity to “call out” the important guiding reason on why we work so hard organizing such drives. My friends, it is good for us all, students, parents and staff, to pause and remember that this work is founded in our love of Christ. Feeding the poor is a Corporal Work of Mercy.

“The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and gives us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.”

I hope you agree, bringing our students closer to Christ by allowing them to participate—even if it means simply bringing in a box of stuffing, is an important step to helping them learn to walk in Jesus’s footsteps.

As you send your donations, help distribute or support this drive, remind your student, that we do these things in honor of our shared Faith in Christ!

Academic Targets

Students who experience our school from kindergarten through 8th grade have an outstanding success rate as they join area highs schools. We take pride in sending forth accomplished students.

As schools at every level are finding, one of the more challenging academic targets for young people involves reading and responding to “informational text”. It is not surprising that this area is one of our instructional focuses over the next months, as we prepare for Terra Nova testing and beyond.

Each week, in grades 3-8, in addition to the robust daily academic work, they will also be targeting “responding to informational text”. Students will be reading short, non-fiction grade level appropriate passages and then using evidence from what they have read, responding to questions. The “global“ hurdle for young people is “citing evidence” from text. We believe by targeting regularly and challenging our students often, learning mastery will not be far behind!

CARES Staffing Note

We wanted to share an update with our Holy Family community. As many families are aware, long-time CARES staff team member, Mrs. Paula Gaspero was unable to return at the start of this school year due to health reasons. Please join us in keeping Mrs. Gaspero and her family in your prayers during her recovery. Having recently spoken with her, she regularly asks how everyone is doing and looks forward to the time when she can return. In addition to CARES, Mrs. Gaspero, a St. Joseph School alum, also worked many years as lunchroom aid and as a parent, volunteer library aid.

CYO and YOU!

As noted in an early newsletter, the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team are the area Champs. They recently played their way through the second round in the Archdiocesan Playoffs where they were ultimately defeated prior to semifinals. Way to go girls!

A great season for these young ladies and coaches. They should be proud. They ended the Season as Region 30 Champions!!!

Now it is on to CYO Basketball Signups—a great opportunity for Holy Family School boys and girls to participate in fun way!

Clearances for Volunteers - An Important Reminder

In order to volunteer for school activities, both inside and outside of the classroom, State and Archdiocesan clearances must be completed, and copies turned into the School Business Office.

It is especially important that new volunteers look at the Protecting God’s Children class schedule through virtusonline for info on dates, times and locations.

All clearances must be submitted to the Business Office by 12/7/18 to be considered for any volunteer opportunities during the school year

More clearance information can be found on the Safe Environment Page of our website.

Did you know that Holy Family collects box tops?  We are always looking to collect boxtops to help our school!  When you collect them, please make sure to look at the expiration date and cut carefully on the dotted lines.
