Allison Norton-Rimron, Hanesbrands, Inc. presents Hispanic Leadership Award to Karla Pereira

It is with great pride that the Hispanic League, in coordination with Hanesbrands, Inc. presents this prestieious award to Karla Pereira.  It is a great honor to recognize her contributions made through leadership and hard work that often go unnoticed and unrewarded.

Karla is a licensed pediatrician in her home country of Nicaragua. She has also acquired a dual Master’s degree in Health and Business Administration from Pfeiffer University. Karla Pereira is a certified medical interpreter who works at Forsyth Medical Center.  In 2009, Karla was named the IMIA (International Medical Interpreters Association) Interpreter of the year.

Karla and her family moved to Winston Salem almost 20 years ago from Nicaragua, initially to find medical treatment for her daughter. Since moving to Winston, Karla has become very involved in the Hispanic community both through her work and through volunteer activities outside of work.

In her profession, Karla has brought support to patients, families and staff in her role as a Spanish Interpreter. Karla’s “Team Builder Spirit” and her medical experience as a Pediatrician led to the development of new systems and innovative ways to deliver Interpreters-Translation training services to Health Care Providers and colleagues. She helped to create a script in Mother and Baby Unit to accomplish a better way to do sight interpretation to create teaching methods in Mother and Baby Unit that guaranteed better outcomes for the Hispanic mothers.

In her community, Karla gives her time to extend her services to Hispanic families.  She is a strong advocate and educator to Latinos about the importance of healthcare.  She has such a strong passion for helping others and she is constantly looking for ways to get involved and help bridge the language and cultural differences in her community.  She actively serves with Forsyth Tech’s medical interpreter program, the March of Dimes & several professional organizations including the NC FOCIS (Forum of Coordination of Interpreter Services).
