Homework

You may be used to seeing daily homework or weekly packets sent home.... well, this year will look a little different!

Students should interact with books every night, reading on their own or with family members and talking about those books to sharpen their comprehension. It is also beneficial for them to have lots of conversations with family about a wide variety of topics because it builds relationships and develops communication skills needed at school. Other than that, regular homework assignments will not be given this year.

If you would like additional practice or if your child would like to challenge themselves, please visit the "For Kids" page for websites that have fun learning games. You could also have your child try the following activities:

* Reading

- Print is all around us, so don't forget to read and discuss things other

than books sometimes! Magazines, comic books, newspapers, menus, road

signs, and food packages, are just some of the other types of texts that

are great for practicing reading and thinking skills.

* Writing

- Keep a journal of daily thoughts, feelings, activities.

- Write notes to family members.

- Write grocery lists and to-do lists for the family.

* Math

- Use flash cards to practice addition/subtraction facts.

- Use information from Weekly Updates about new concepts we are

learning and practice those at home.

- Ask your child to teach you how to play math games we have learned in

class.

* Sight Words

- Go to Spelling City to access word lists from my class page. Some

words reflect those on our class word wall and some will be new to your

child. Click on a link under "Vocabulary and Spelling Lists" to view the

words on that list. From there you will be able to print flashcards, hear

the words spelled/used in sentences, and play spelling/vocabulary games

with the words. *Note: We will not have spelling tests.... instead, the goal is

that students will be able to quickly recognize these words in their reading

and use them in their writing.

- Put words on index cards (or print from the website above) for reading

and spelling practice.

- Play a Word Matching Game: make 2 sets of word cards, turn them

face down and try to find the matching words.

- Play Word Bingo: Make 2 sets of word cards, lay one set out face up in

a grid formation. Use the other set to call out the words, turn cards face

down or cover with a marker as words are called. Yell "Bingo" when all

words in a row, column, or diagonal are covered.
