Transcendentalism Crash Course:
Transcendentalists were on a quest for truth*
*Truth: Anything an individual judges to be correct, based on ones intuition.
The basic principles:
1. Connection “oneness” with nature
2. Conviction to work towards social justice- “All humans deserve the opportunity to fulfill his or her human potential.” Indirectly led to feminism and civil rights for African Americans.
3. Self reliance & trust intuition- search for one’s self & don’t look to society for answers.
The challenge of transcendentalism is that it means different things to different people; thus, no set definition. It is vague because it favors the spiritual over logic and science.
Oversoul: Man, nature and god as one (reject church, no middle man between transcendentalists and god and/or spirituality).
