What's happening in 5th grade with Ms. Landrum!

April is Poetry month!

A-Squad is OUR NAME! Being awesome is the way. We are focused on getting your scholars ready for middle school. Please hold your scholars accountable of completing homework; while juggling outside activities.

I appreciate the positive communication between us, and my hope is that it will continue to thrive in 2017. To accomplish this, we must work together and communicate regularly. I encourage you to play an active role in your scholar’s education by closely monitoring your scholar’s effort and understanding of academic content.

Encourage positive behavior and leadership from your scholar at all times.

Congratulations to the Scholars in Action recognition for Respect and Responsibility:

  • Lyric
  • Troy
  • Samara

  • Joshua
  • Dayon

  • NaJmir

C-Cooperation-working together and working it out

A-Assertion. Being assertive means to stand up for yourself and others without causing harm.

R-Respect and Responsibility is our November's words of the month. We are in charge of ourselves and our actions.       We treat others the way we want to be treated.

E-Empathy-We think about how other people feel.

S-Self Control-We remain calm and control our actions even when we feel angry, excited, frustrated, or tired.

This week in reading:

Good readers learn and practice routines and procedures to have a successful Reader's Workshop. "Reading is Thinking" and scholars know to record on sticky notes:

  1. Make personal connections to their books
  2. Ask the author questions
  3. Make I wonder statements
  4. Express likes or dislikes about the book to the author
  5. Express feelings
Great readers make inferences while reading and analyze characters to better understand the author's message. Using quotes and incorporating schema helps our readers make inferences in non-fiction texts.

This week in writing:

Ms. Middleton is now all 5th grade students writing teacher. Please check out her studio website regarding updates. However, students are still applying their writing abilities in our studio during our "station" time. Please ask your scholar of any updates and exciting news regarding our studio.

Focus points in Social Studies/Science/Design Thinking:

Social Studies: How and Why did Europeans come to the New World?

Science: Forces and Motion (distance, time, speed, and point of reference)

        Newton's Laws of Motion

Simple Machines and how do they work

        Roller Coaster Design

Design thinking: Our second design challenge was to design a way to educate the community and motivate others to join our family. The Design Thinking Expo will occur in June 8, 2017.

Also, you can check your student's progress on Mastery Connect for Science and Social Studies content. Parents, please provide your email address to access this information.

If any questions arise, please email me at slandrum@hfaes.org or contact me on Remind101 as soon as possible. I will be available to meet Mondays and Fridays ONLY from 4:00-4:30.
