      • Dance Audition: Mrs. May and Mrs. Kenney are excited to move the epic play of West Side Story forward through dance. Mrs. Gardner is enthusiastic about the dancing and would like to keep as much of the original scoring for dancing as possible. That is a lot of dance! Woohoo! We would like to appropriately prepare all scholars who desire to be in this play to be successful. This will be a rigorous experience and opportunity. The day of the audition Mrs. May will teach a short dance combination that pulls from some of the most challenging movements and aesthetics in the choreography. This combination will be taught in 15 minutes, there will then be a ten minute break and then the auditions will begin! Mrs. May and Mrs. Kenney will judge the auditions and will be looking at performance quality, technicality and memory of the choreography. This rigorous pacing is reflective of the rehearsal process. Once dance rehearsals for the play begin, scholars alongside Mrs. May and Mrs. Kenney will have eight total rehearsal days to learn eight 3-6 minute dances. This will be accomplished by dividing students into groups and assigning sections of the dance for them to learn. Some will be taught by Mrs. May and Mrs. Kenney while others will be expected to teach themselves from the video recording. Mrs. Gardner would like to use the resource of the re-set choreography of West Side Story for high school by the Musical Theater Institute. CHOREOGRAPHY HERE from the Musical Theatre International website, which includes the full version of each of the eight dances. Do you know what this means? You have full access to all of the material for the dances! In other words, you can start NOW to learn the dances. You can start NOW to teach yourself any movement that you are not familiar with. If you know it takes you awhile to learn choreography or you are not as familiar with this style of dancing recognize that you have an incredible opportunity to give yourself a great head start. After Mrs. May and Mrs. Kenney set the choreography they will select dance captains who will clean the dances under Mrs. Gardner's direction leading up to the play. Does this sound exciting? Good! Go for it!
