High School Scheduling Process

We were SO lucky to have Deep Run HS come and visit on Friday (1/18) to provide us with great information about scheduling/ course selection and high school transition for next year!  If you/ your child was absent or did not receive the information, I have extra handouts. Please feel free to stop by/ have them stop by School Counseling and pick this up.  To help with questions you may have along the way, I have 1) listed important dates (below), 2) listed a link to the "Rising 9th Grade" section of the Deep Run School Counseling Website (below) and 3) attached the PowerPoint presentation from Friday's meeting in case you were absent/ your child or would like to look back on it to answer questions.  You will also see step by step guide to selecting courses for high school.  As always, I am available to you if you have questions or need help.  I will also include this information in the Puma Blast, School Website, School Counseling Website and on the rolling announcements!  :)  

1/9 - HS Counselors visit Holman
1/10 - HS Counselors visit Moody
1/18 - HS Counselors visit Short Pump
1/18- Deadline for teachers to make recommendations
1/30 - Elective Fair - 5pm, AP Course Panel - 7 pm
2/4-15 - Parents review recommendations and course requests.
2/5 - Summer Online PE Info Session @ Glen Allen High School, 7 PM
2/6 - Summer Online PE Info Session @ Varina High School, 7 PM
2/18-3/8 - MS Counselors review course selections with students.
2/22- Application Deadline for Yearbook.
3/1 - Parent Overrides due – guaranteed placement.
4/11 - Freshman Parent 101 - 6 pm
4/26 - Parent Overrides due – contingent on space availability.
6/14 - LAST DAY to make schedule change requests for next school year

STEP #2 and #3

  • #2:  Acknowledge understanding of student recommendations (and contact you child's counselor for an override form if you disagree with a recommendation).  
  • #3:  Select elective courses
    • Refer to the BLUE document sent home with students on 1/18 during DRHS Counselor Visits.

ELECTIVE/CURRICULUM FAIR

Wednesday, January 30, 2018

5:00-6:30 p.m. 

·        Find out about exciting high school electives.

·        Plan your freshman year schedule.

·        Meet a few Deep Run HS teachers & students.

·        Find answers to your questions about 9th grade classes, schedules and course planning.

 

Students and their families can visit the Elective Fair to browse the displays on various

electives.  Join us at 6:00 p.m. for the presentation given by the School Counseling

Department, “Creating a Freshman Schedule & Graduation Requirements”.

 (If you have time, stay for the Advanced Placement (AP) Panel at 6:30 p.m. – DRHS Auditorium.  Learn about course expectations, summer work and how NOT to be overloaded with AP courses during your High School experience.)

SPECIALTY CENTERS 
(Kick-off is on Monday, November 19th at 9am) 
UPDATE 11/18/18:  
  • Parents will login through the PowerSchool Parent Portal and submit the permission and waiver info first.  After 24 hours of that submission, students will be able to login.
  • Students will access the online application using the following url: https://hcpsapps.henrico.k12.va.us/
  • Student credentials are used to login.  PowerSchool Parent Portal credentials will not allow access.
  • For specific questions regarding recommendations outside of HCPS teachers, please contact center chairs.  They can advise you on their policy/ procedure. Check out the Specialty Center Quick Reference Guide/ Requirements (also below for contact information).  
  • District SchoolMessenger Notifications to all Grade 8 Students regarding the kick off of the Specialty Center Online Application kicked off on 11/16 starting at 5pm.
  • The district webpage regarding Specialty Centers is another resource for parents and students.

The Application Process:  Mrs. Mayo, the 8th Grade School Counselor for the 2018-2019 School Year, will be assisting students with Specialty Center Applications and helping them through the process.  She visited each student's World History or Civics/ Economics class and went over the following application process details during the visit/ lesson she presented:

MAGGIE L. WALKER GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL

The process for applying to the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School is in the form of an online application in the Rycor system through Powerschool. School Counselors distributed letters inviting qualifying students to apply. Letters were distributed in World Language classes.. If your student did not receive a letter or you do not see the MLWGS application as an option when you login to Powerschool/Rycor please review the "Criteria for Applying" document on the web at http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/mlwgs/maggie-l-walker-governor-school/ for further information. If your student does not meet the criteria listed, but would like to be considered as an applicant, parents are required to write a letter and submit it as soon as possible, as there will be a deadline determined. If you feel like your student met the requirements for Governor’s School and did not receive a letter, please contact Mrs. Mayo, 8th grade School Counselor, as soon as possible at (804) 364-0837 or jcsmayo@henrico.k12.vs.us. There will also be an informational session held at Maggie Walker on November 12th from 6:30-8:30pm.
