Dear Palermo Families,

Our school year is well underway and we look forward to another amazing year at Palermo Public School.

We want to thank all our returning and new Parent Council members for sharing their time and energy to be a part of our 2017-2018 school parent council.

Nicolle Memon and I (Cindy Jeffers) are this year’s Parent Council Co-Chairs.  There have been so many activities and events at Palermo celebrating the richness of our community and diversity of our students’ interests and backgrounds.  We hope everyone will participate in the many programs being offered to our students at Palermo.

Please remember you do not need to be a member of Parent Council to attend our monthly meetings, held the first Monday of each month.  Engagement by our community, however small, is significant enough to make an impact.  We look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones this year at Palermo.

Who is Parent Council?

Parent Council is made up of parent volunteers, the school Principal, Vice-Principal and sometimes a teacher representative.  Council may also have a community member be a part of council who does not have a child at the school i.e. YMCA Program Representative.

What does Parent Council Do?

Parent Council’s role is to work in collaboration with school administration on behalf of parents to help enhance and enrich the school experience for Palermo students in a safe and positive environment.

What is the role of FundRaising and Parent Council?

Fundraising is the most visible role that Parent Council plays at school. As parents, you will receive various newsletters and forms about fundraising initiatives sponsored by Parent Council. We do not expect parents to participate in every fundraiser.

Why Do We FundRaise?

School funding has changed over the years and many items that may have been provided for when we were students in school no longer receive financial support from the education system.  Our fundraising efforts help ensure that our children are receiving the best opportunities to thrive, explore and celebrate their diverse interests in school.

Examples of past purchases through fundraising include:

  • School Sign

  • Scoreboard

  • Theatre & Musical Presentations in the school

  • Gym Equipment and Team Uniforms

  • Playground Structure

  • IT Equipment like Smart Boards, iPads, Data Projectors, Chromebooks, Laptops

  • Musical Instruments

  • Kindergarten Discovery Centre

  • Greening of Playground and Outdoor Classroom (future fundraising project)
