Grade 2 News September 2017

Dear Parents,

I am very excited about starting a new year in Grade 2 with your child. I have put together this newsletter to keep you informed with classroom events and the curriculum that we will be covering this term. I look forward to working with you to ensure your child’s success.

Please read through the following items which will acquaint you with some specifics in regards to our classroom:

In order to keep our classroom tidy, your child should have a pair of shoes to be worn only inside as of Monday, September 11. It would be helpful if their names were written in their shoes as well as boots, coats, snow pants and knapsacks in case of duplicate items between students so if the items get lost we can more easily track down the owner.

Phys.Ed:

We have physical education on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with Mrs. Austin. Your child will need to have running shoes to participate. Platform runners or hiking boots are not acceptable shoes for gym because of safety concerns. We also aim to have DPA (daily physical activity) each day for 20 minutes, thus it is essential to have running shoes at school every day.

Spelling: We will be having weekly spelling tests on Fridays. The students will receive their words and homework on Mondays starting September 11 .

Agendas: This is the main communication tool between home and school. Students are expected to have their agenda at school everyday as they will be writing down homework and reminders. Please initial the agenda each evening to show that you have seen it. Any notes regarding picking up your child, planned absences, transportation changes, academic or family concerns may be noted in the agenda. I strive to read and initial each agenda every morning. PLEASE RETURN THE AGENDA DAILY IN THE ZIPLOCK BAG PROVIDED.

Library: Our library time is once per week on Friday mornings. Students will be able to take out or renew library materials at this time.

In terms of homework, your child will have some activities to complete at home on occasion and may be asked to complete some incomplete class work at home from time to time as well. Our board’s guidelines for Grade 2 are approx. 15 minutes per night, and although I may not assign homework every night, your child should be reading for that 15 minutes an a daily basis. Our Home Reading program will also begin the week of September 11.

Music:

We will have music with Mr. Rajczak on Mondays and Thursdays.

Scholastic Book Orders:

Scholastic orders are also being sent home next week. This company provides a wide array of quality children's literature and other educational items at reasonable prices. Please understand that you are under no obligation to order books or participate.

Thank you! A big thank you to those who donated essential supplies such as a box of tissues and a roll of paper towels. Thank you to those who came prepared with school supplies. Please remember to return any forms sent home as soon as possible.

Volunteers in the school system must have a police background check done (which is to be submitted to the main office) before they come into the classroom. An in-service regarding important school guidelines must take place before volunteering in any classroom. If you are interested in volunteering please let me know and I will contact you when needed.

I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming open house next month, details to follow soon. If you have any other questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. You may write a note in the agenda as I check the agendas each morning or email me at pavicicl@hdsb.ca
