Welcome to Grade 9 Healthy, Active Living!

What do we do? Our goal is for you to find enjoyable ways to be healthy and active for life! We will try a variety of activities (traditional and non-traditional sports / games) where the goals are to develop your physical literacy - how you move to send & receive objects; how you move in offense & defensive situations. Goal setting and actions plans to be successful in reaching your goals will be emphasized in the gym, the classroom, online, and in the fitness centre. Healthy relationships are also a significant part of the course - how you interact with and treat yourself, your family, your peers, and in online environments.

Major Task - There are project and activity components to the Final 30 at the end of the course. The different activities will provide opportunities for students to show their strengths in sending skills, offensive and defensive sport strategies. As for the project portion, we infuse learning and development of the 40 Developmental Assets throughout the course. At the end of the course, you will be asked to reflect on your journey of asset development. You will share your learning in a way that interests you - presentation, website, blog, powerpoint, journals, etc. 

Highlights - You will spend time in the amazing gym and field spaces doing all kinds of activities. You will also have the opportunity to use the fitness centre facilities to learn about fitness training and to strengthen your body for daily activities and anything else for which you might be training. For 4 days in September (Sem 1) and June (Sem 2), you'll get to try Rock Climbing in the gym. We'll also have fun with learning some self defense strategies in each semester. Please complete each company's waivers, below, and return them to your teacher prior to participation in these amazing experiences! The course emphasizes participation, working to improve, and finding activities you'll want to do in order to stay healthy for life, so don't stress about whether or not you're a 'sport' expert! There will be lots of opportunities for you to ask questions and to explore areas of interest in health and sport. We aim to build a flexible learning environment, so come with your questions, enthusiasm and be ready to have fun!

Important Notes - In order to participate fully in a safe way, please ensure you have clean indoor and separate outdoor running shoes. It's important that you bring your gym clothes with you every day - and take them home for a cleaning once in awhile! A Hayden t-shirt will be provided for all students, with the opportunity to purchase an extra t-shirt from the school store. Hayden shorts and sweatpants will also be available for purchase. Pack a bag with suncreen, a hat, deodorant, sweatshirt/pants & extra socks because our days can easily change based on the weather. We look forward to a great year!
