Second grade is a time of blossoming independence.
More in-depth than kindergarten or first grade, students start to apply the skills that they have been learning to tackle more challenging tasks.
In second grade students will continue to practice their academic skills and use them with more ease.

I look forward to working with your child and with you this year!  Together we will achieve great things and our students will succeed!

This week in Mr. French's class we will continue our exploration of currency; counting coins and solving word problems about money.  We will also introduce a new strategy to help us add and subtract; number lines.

Students in Mr. French's class will also complete the research for their science fair projects this week.  (The science fair is on March 6th!)

Below you can find this week's math homework.

Valentine's Day Celebration

posted Feb 6, 2017, 12:07 PM by JACOB FRENCH

Notes went home Monday, February 6 about the small celebration that our class will be hosting for Valentine's Day.  Students will eat a few snacks and exchange cards.  The letter also had proper spellings of all students' names, so reference it if necessary.

If you'd like to send in something for the children to enjoy (chips, candy, etc), please fill out the form and return it to school so preparations can be made.

Finally, children will need a box to receive their cards and treats.  Be creative in how you decorate it!  They can be brought to school the morning of Valentine's Day!

The time is here once again for Parent-Teacher conferences.  Notes about conferences went home with students on Monday, February 6.  Please respond at your earliest convenience so scheduling can be complete by the end of the week.

Benchmark Week #2 (Feb. 6 - Feb. 10)

posted Feb 6, 2017, 11:59 AM by JACOB FRENCH

This week our students will be taking the 2nd benchmark for the year.  Tuesday and Wednesday will be READING tests and Thursday and Friday will be comprised of the MATH test.  Students have worked hard this semester to prepare in class, but there are a couple ways you can help prepare them further at home.
  1. Make sure your child gets a good night's rest each night this week.  This might mean sending them to bed a little earlier than usual and making sure they're not staying up playing video games, watching TV, etc.
  2. Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast before school.  If your child eats breakfast at school each day, than this is already taken care of for you.  If you feed your child breakfast at home, do your best to make sure it is healthy!

Hello, Everyone!

Last Friday you received a copy of E.B. White's Charlotte's Web.  The school will be reading this book as part of the "One School, One Book" project.  We had a kickoff assembly telling the children about it last Friday and they were sent home a letter detailing which chapters should be read at home and when.  Please stick to this schedule as closely as you can!

Math homework for the week can be found below.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

2017 is upon us and we are already back at school and hard at work.  Only a few short weeks left until our next round of benchmark testing, so we are striving to cover everything our kiddos will need to know for mastery.

This week in math, we continue practicing all the skills we learned before the winter holiday break, including multi-digit addition and subtraction strategies, multi-step word problems, and organizing, displaying, and interpreting data (from pictographs, line-plots, and bar graphs).

This week's homework can be found below...in case Johnny misplaced it or the new dog Spot had it for a midnight snack.

Our field trip is this Friday!  Don't forget to bring a lunch from home if you signed up to do so!

Also, the 2nd grade Christmas program will be presented next week!  You should have received information about it in your child's binder.  Ask if you have questions!

Homework for the week is attached.

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a restful and joyous Thanksgiving holiday.  We've got 3 solid weeks of school before winter break gets here so it's time to hit the ground running.  In math, our investigation into bar graphs and pictographs continues this week, as does our exploration of even and odd numbers.  In science, we will continue to discuss sound and how we hear it.

Our field trip to see "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" at Cape Fear Regional Theatre is coming up on December 9th, we're excited!

Information went home about our toy/pajama drive and our annual Angel Tree; if you can help with either of these projects, please do so.
