Welcome to Mrs. Timberlake's 5th grade class!  I am very excited to be a part of the Sandy Grove Elementary team.  I am licensed to teach in three states and I have over 6 years of teaching experience in both an elementary and middle school setting.  Currently I am pursuing a master's degree in psychology with an emphasis on marriage family and couple counseling/ therapy at Capella University.

In our class the focus is on the three R's (ready, responsible, and respect).  Students are encouraged to practice acts of kindness toward self and others daily, be responsible for their work and their choices, and be ready with all materials necessary to be successful.

Each week the students create a vocabulary slideshow in class using google slides that is shared in google classroom.  This slideshow is due every Friday and students should be adding new words that they encounter in their everyday life to their vocabulary journals.  The slideshow must have a picture, the definition of the word (in the student's own words) and a sentence with the vocabulary word used correctly.  Additionally the slideshow should demonstrate an understanding of capitalization, spelling, and punctuation.

Also students are to practice close reading strategies in class and at home prior to and during reading times.  Close reading strategies include:  circle unknown words in a text, make connections to the text (text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to world/media), asking questions while reading (predictions), making inferences (using background knowledge along with evidence in the text to find the author's deeper meaning), gathering evidence from the text to support an answer, and setting a purpose for reading.  Social studies is integrated within the study of English Language Arts via the informational reading strand of the common core standards.  The reading strategies mentioned above will be utilized during Social Studies instruction.

Finally students write daily in our class.  In addition to daily written responses, summaries, and a ticket out, students have journals that they write in everyday and they are often encouraged to share what they've written to sharpen their speaking and listening skills.
