Introduction to BioDiesel
Biodiesel production is the process of producing the biofuel, biodiesel, through the chemical reactions transesterification and esterification. This involves vegetable or animal fats and oils being reacted with short-chain alcohols (typically methanol or ethanol). This course will introduce you to biofuels; compare/contrast biodiesel & petroleum diesel; test oils for suitability for biodiesel production; show you how to make quality biodiesel from waste cooking oil; & learn how to test the quality of the biodiesel produced. [15 hours]
Introduction to Wind Turbine and Electric Systems
In this course you will learn:
Safety procedures in operation and controls of small wind turbine systems
Demonstrate and understand AC/DC systems and their usage
Identify system components and their use in wind turbine systems
Identify turbine types and type configurations
Design and Build a Micro Wind Turbine System
Introduction to Micro-Hydro Systems
This is a course that provides an introduction into the overview of what is required in designing a micro-hydro system. The focus will be on core concepts that may be applied to a wide range of hydro applications, including irrigation ditches that are commonly found. Participants will perform preliminary system sizing for mechanical and electrical power generation of small 1-2kW systems.
This course combines class lectures and lab exercises. Hands-on exercises include: methods of flow measurement, determining head, analyzing and assembling small functioning systems. Included are methods on how to implement diversion loads and incorporating battery charging for both reserve and surge loads. Some of the topics covered are: Safety Procedures, System Components, Turbine Types, AC and DC Systems, Site Analysis, System Design, Battery Storage, Controls, Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Hybrid Systems.
