The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) approved a supplement of $265,018 to the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library to continue their participation in the NDNP. The award is for another two years starting in July 2012 until August 2014. More details to come!
06/14/12 - The project team members are sad to hear the passing of Hawaii newspaper historian Helen Geracimos Chapin on Saturday, June 9, 2012. She served on the project’s advisory board during the project’s first phase.
Dr. Chapin chronicled Hawaii newspapers in her books “Shaping History: The Role of Newspapers in Hawaii” and “A Guide to Newspapers in Hawaii, 1834-2000.” These books serve as secondary and tertiary resources for Hawaii newspaper research, and the Hawaii Digital Newspaper Project used them extensively in choosing the newspaper titles and developing the historical essays and articles, topic guides, presentations, and other educational materials. The project appreciates Dr. Chapin’s extensive contributions to the scholarly research on Hawaii newspapers and the project.
12/18/11 - Alison Jones of Tufts University discusses in the article "The Many Uses of Newspapers" how researchers use historical newspapers and the digitization of newspapers.
09/20/11 - Digital Newspapers "The Biographer's New Best Friend" - NYTimes.com reports that "Several campaigns to digitize newspapers — Readex's "American Historical Newspapers" available by subscription at research universities, or the free "Chronicling America" collection available at the Library of Congress — have the potential to revolutionize biographical research."
07/20/2011 Update: The Chronicling America database now contains 3,999,267 pages from 506 papers from 25 states (including DC) from 1836-1922.
