Welcome to HI-SKILLS!

HI-SKILLS is an after-school program for Hawaiʻi's school kids that gives participants the chance to appreciate the role of language in society, while learning research skills and having fun!

Kids are experts about the language they hear around them every day. The HI-SKILLS program puts kids at the center of linguistic discovery by guiding them through the process of carrying out original research on language use in their own peer groups, families, and communities.

Participants will collaboratively build a language-related research project while learning about...

✓ Linguistic diversity & the value of multilingualism
    ✓ Linguistic justice & equality
✓ Heritage languages and family ethnography
    ✓ Endangered languages
    ✓ Linguistic identity
    ✓ Dialects & slang
    ✓ Where words come from
    ✓ Translation
    ✓ What is linguistics
    ✓ Multimedia & web skills
