Students who attend Havergal College have the opportunity and convenience of private music lessons on campus. These lessons may be scheduled before and after school as well as during lunch or free periods and are available to students from Grade 1 to Grade 12. Lessons are coordinated and provided by an excellent staff of professional and experienced teacher-performers. A complete listing of instruments, including voice, is included on the application form. Students are encouraged to consider taking private lessons, especially if they are enrolled in music classes. Private music instruction affords your daughter the opportunity to receive individual attention structured to suit her learning style and talent potential. Individual instruction is the most expedient method of acquiring a strong foundation. Private lessons greatly enhance the quality of the student’s musical experience and provide the foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of music.
The decision to take private lessons should be considered very carefully as it requires thoughtful family planning regarding the scheduling of a weekly lesson. Additionally, it is prudent to consider a one-year commitment as the teacher will require this time-frame in order to become acquainted with your daughter’s learning styles and full talent potential.

Havergal College supports private music lessons for Havergal students in two ways. The school provides the facilities for the lessons and ensures all private music instructors working at Havergal agree to comply with policies related to abuse, harassment and social media (available in the Family Handbook) and have on file a criminal record check including vulnerable sector screening.
Students are to register for private lessons between August 29 and September 12, 2023. All arrangements related to instruction are managed entirely by the private music instructor with support from the Director of Performing Arts. This includes the scheduling of lessons, provision of music, billing and receipting for lessons and issuing of tax receipts. All lessons will be assigned during the first week of September and lessons will begin during the second week of September. With the exception of a piano, students are required to provide their own instrument. Please note: It is not recommended to enroll in piano lessons, if you do not own a piano or keyboard. Students in the band and strings program are afforded the opportunity of renting instruments from the school. Once enrolled, parents will be sent a commitment letter outlining payment details and cancellation policies and this must be signed and returned with payment prior to the commencement of the first lesson. Parents or students with questions or comments regarding private music lessons should address them directly to the student’s instructor or the Director of Performing Arts.
Regular, punctual attendance at lessons is required. Students will be charged for all missed lessons except:
lessons cancelled by the teacher;
lessons cancelled due to illness, when 24 hour notice has been given;
lessons falling on school holidays;
lessons cancelled due to school trips, when three days prior notice has been given to the instructor.
Lessons are offered in three sessions, coinciding with the three academic terms. The method of payment will be arranged by the instructor (cheque, email transfer). Note: student accounts at Havergal College will no longer be charged for private music lessons. Since the music lessons term sessions vary in length, the following fee schedule has been established:
Fall Session: 12 Weeks
One half-hour per week $460
One 45 min. per week $688
Two half-hours or one hour per week $920
Winter Session: 9 Weeks
One half-hour per week $346
One 45 min. per week $518
Two half-hours or one hour per week $688
Spring Session: 10 Weeks
One half-hour per week $385
One 45 min. per week $576
Two half-hours or one hour per week $764
In order to cancel lessons for the second and third sessions (winter and spring), a parent or guardian must communicate the desire to cancel in writing (email or letter) directly to the student's instructor no later than November 24, 2023, for the winter session and March 1, 2024, for the spring session.
Should it prove necessary to withdraw from private lessons at some time during the fall session, the following refund policy will apply: students will be charged for all lessons given or scheduled until a written withdrawal notice has been received by the instructor. If cancellation of lessons occurs before the sixth lesson of a 12-lesson term, then a student will be refunded for the remaining lessons. However, if cancellation occurs after the sixth lesson, there will be no refund.

Please make note of the new application deadlines. Every effort is made to accommodate all applications; however, from time to time, waiting lists are required for popular instruments. Applications will be sent to the private music instructors who will contact the family to schedule lessons and make arrangement for payment.
