Harwich High School

May 12th week of events

A few MRHS updates:

1)      We had a very productive meeting with the guidance staff of both HHS and CHS on Thursday which also included our Curriculum and Instruction Director as well as the incoming principal. The dialog continues regarding incoming students and if their classes will be weighted as currently exists in Harwich or not as currently exists in Chatham.  .

2)      Students need to remember that the window to schedule courses for next year closes on Monday night at midnight. After that course requests will be processed in the order received. If you have questions please contact your child’s guidance counselor. Special thanks to Holly Thyng for all her work on the technical end of this process

3)      The back parking lot will be open to students and staff on Monday May 12th. Please be aware that the granite curbing is about two inches taller that the original one. Please take this into consideration when pulling in.

Monday night we will honor our juniors at the Annual Junior Book Awards. This is one of the nicest nights of the year as we recognize the hard work put forth by members of our junior class. The event takes place in our library at 7pm. Special thanks to my administrative assistant for all the hard work she puts for on making the event a reality.

Please join our seniors this Thursday night for the Annual Senior Arts Night starting at the Lutz Art Gallery at 6pm for a reception and display of art and then to the Pilgrim Congregational church for the concert starting at 7pm.  There is no fee for admission and the event is always AMAZING.

Thank you to the parents who did such an outstanding job putting together the After Prom Celebration together. I know it takes literally hundreds of hours to make this a reality for our students.

Harwich High School is planning a Golf Tournament to raise money for a scholarship in memory and in honor of Elizabeth LeFort, daughter of Harwich High School Math teacher Janis McGrory. Liz died of a drug overdose in 2011 at the age of 23.  This scholarship was started by Chris Herren, former NBA Celtics basketball player, when he came to Harwich High School this past January to speak to our student body.  Chris tells his story of his addiction.  His story includes the horror of being an addict, how it affected his relationships with his family and then ultimately led to losing a promising career in professional basketball.  Students at Harwich High were so impressed with his story and his generosity that they would like to see this scholarship stay alive year after year..  You are all invited to play to the FIRST and hopefully annual "Love Liz Golf Tournament".  June 1st at 1PM at the Harwich Port Golf Course.   The cost is $50 and includes 9 holes of golf, a pull cart, and prizes.  For more information contact Jan at jmcgrory@monomoy.edu.

All parents are invited to attend an after prom planning meeting on Jan 15, 2014 (Wed), 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the cafeteria.  This month’s meeting will be a brain storming session.  Come share your ideas for activities, food, and fun for our May 9th after prom event.  After Prom committee has set up a web site on Shutterfly.com called 2014hhsafterprom.shutterfly.com to simplify communication and keep parents up to date on their planning and fund raising progress. Please email kelly.gallant@comcast.net to be included in the site access.  Hope to see you on Wednesday.

Attention Parents: The last day to purchase the last Harwich High School yearbook in February 10th.  The cost of the yearbook is $75. You can pay cash, check made out to MRSD, or online at www.ybpay.com.   Any question to Mr.Heggi at jheggi@monomoy.edu

I have a special message for the parents of our ninth graders:

Once again this summer our students are invited to attend the PCC program.

This is a six week educational, summer program held at Stonehill College.  Students participate in exciting academics, the arts, social activities and athletics.  They live in the college dorms and are well supervised on weekdays, and then they come home on weekends.   Students should have good academic skills and mature behavior to succeed.   The program is well-suited to students with creative talents as well.  Students who have attended this program in the past have been truly inspired by what they have learned and they enjoy the quality of the other outstanding students in their age group who attend.  There are about 500 talented grade 8 and 9 students from Southeastern MA at PCC each summer.   This year there will be a special group of 25exchange students coming from China as a pilot program for international exchange.

We encourage all interested students to pick up an application in the Guidance Office right away.  They will be due back on January 21, 2014.  Space is quite limited.

You may call our PCC liaison, Mrs. Callagy, in the Guidance Office for additional information at 508 430 7209.

On Thursday - January 9th – Former college star and Celtic player Chris Herren came to Harwich High School and made a remarkable presentation to both the Harwich and Chatham high school students.  He not only told about his own journey dealing with alcohol and drug addiction but made our kids think about their choices and how they feel about themselves.  Many of the students were amazed by his stories but particularly interested in how he would talk to his own children.  Chris’s son is now 14 years old.

Chris Herren explained to our students that he would look his son in the eyes and ask him “Why his friends did not think he was "good enough" the way his is now. Why does he have to be something different? He did an excellent job of encouraging students to like themselves for who they are and not to start with drugs and alcohol like he did. He was also very clear with the kids that while some people don’t feel alcohol and marijuana are not gateway drugs they certainly were for him and for many of the people he encountered during his rehab stays.

The Chris Herren Presentation was brought to the high school by the Originators of the Lower Cape Can (Jan McGrory, Cheryl Dufault, Robin Titus, Harwich Detective Bob Brackett, Angie Chilaka), the Harwich Police Association, and Ms. Sheila House and the Harwich Youth Services.

Wonderful job, as usual, by our Musicians and Ms. Richard at the Winter Concert on Thursday night.

Tryouts for the spring musical South Pacific will take place on Tuesday night from 4-8pm here at HHS.

Congratulations to all the students and families who will be joining us this Friday for our 10th Annual Renaissance Breakfast honoring our high honors and honor roll students and their parents.

Good luck to our winter athletes as they all open up this week. Go SHARKS!

Let’s us all take a moment over the upcoming Christmas break to reflect on how lucky we are in so many ways. Too often life passes us by without the opportunity to pause; my wish for everyone is that they have the opportunity to pause over the break, give thanks, and hug their child just a little bit tighter. I know I will….

11/4/13 Week of events

On Tuesday, November 12th our seniors will be participating in a “Seniors for Seniors” day of service. Working with Barbara Anne Foley from the COA and Sheila House the Town’s Youth Counselor we will be deploying our entire senior class out into the Harwich Community providing a variety of services from yard cleanups to assisting at The Harwich Food Pantry. If any parent has a suggestion or an idea for us to include please send me an email or give me a call. I think it is important for our students, who have been given so much from our community, have the opportunity to give back in a formal way. Seniors need to have their completed permission slip returned to my office ASAP.

Good luck to our Field Hockey team as they compete today at Dover-Sherborn high school at 1pm in the MIAA South Quarter Finals.

Good luck to our cheerleaders as they compete in Nauset on Thursday night.

Good luck to our football team as they close out the home fall sports season with their game this Friday night at 6pm vs. Old Colony.

MRHS building project is still on time and remains under budget.  We are starting to address items in the building that are of significance such as the Milton Welt mural from 1964 in our lobby and how we can preserve them.   If other Harwich history buffs think of anything else please let me know.

We received another statewide recognition last week when the Boston Globe rated Harwich High School #15 in the state in mathematics growth; this along with our #1 ranking in ELA is certainly something to be proud of.

Just a reminder that the deadline to nominate someone for the last class of inductees for the Harwich High School Hall of Fame is this Friday. Please send me an email with your nomination and a description of why you believe the individual is worth of induction.

Thanks to Bob Kingsbury of the HarwichPort Golf Course of his generous donation to the HHS Spirit club of over $4,500. These funds allow our Peer Leaders to continue to implement events such as our annual Leadership Lock In.

Coach Anderson and members of the Monomoy Golf team will travel to Great Barrington, MA on Sunday and compete for the Division 3 State Championship! Last week the team qualified at Dennis Highlands by finishing tied for first in the South with Martha’s Vineyard. Good luck!

Congratulations to our Field Hockey team for being co-champion of the South Shore League. We look forward to another run at a State Championship!

This week we had a nationally renowned historical art conservator evaluate the possible removal and relocation of the Milton Welt artwork from our main lobby.  More to follow!!!

Construction of MRHS remains on time and under budget and we have been spending valuable time putting together the program of studies for the new school. We are currently looking to increase the Advanced Placement offerings from 8 to 15 (AP World History II, AP Chemistry, AP Music Theory, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Psychology, AP Calculus BC) next year alone with more to come in subsequent years.  We will also be able to offer a wider array of electives such as culinary arts, media production, cabinetry making and installation, and robotics to name a few.  We also anticipate expanding our athletic programs to include some freshman level programs as well as club lacrosse.  A lot is happening so please call or email if you have any questions!

9-30-13 Week of events

Thank you to the overflow crowd of parents who attended open house this past week.  I loved the upbeat nature of the evening even though it does entail racing from one end of the building to the other. Several parents asked about getting a copy of the video I showed titled “Every kid needs a champion” by Rita Pierson.  One option is to go to www.youtube.com and in the search bar type in her name and the title.  You can also go to www.ted.com/talks and search for the video there. For those of you who have never see a Ted talks video I could encourage you to browse the site, there are some powerful videos on a wide range of topics.

As a follow up to the information that was made available at the table in the lobby during open house, I wanted to include the link to both the “Global Student Leaders” Summit in China www.eftours.com/1442858KE and the “Service Learning” opportunity in the Dominican Republic www.eftours.com/1479191KB.  You can also get in touch with Rick Gifford the Chatham High School guidance counselor for more information at rgifford@monomoy.edu.

Construction update – The building remains on time and under budget.  The field, as many of you are aware, was turned over to the district over a week ago. I am still blown away at the outpouring of community support at our opening ceremony.  Deb Donovan and I will be heading to Hartford, CT on Monday with the Monomoy facilities director and a CHS teacher to evaluate building furniture for the new facility. From student desks to lab stations to filing cabinets all possible school furniture will be investigated

Regionalization update – Although watching local access TV is not always the most invigorating I would recommend that if you have a chance to watch the last Monomoy Regional  School Committee meeting from this past Wednesday night the 25th. I made a presentation to the school committee of a draft schedule proposal for the new facility/school for the 2014-2015 school year.   I will place a copy of the Power Point in the important documents section of my web page linked to the district website under the title “Monomoy Scheduling Presentation.”   The proposed draft schedule includes a later start time for high school students as well as an A/B block schedule. Feel free to take a look and provide me any feedback.

There were many parents last night who were confused at open house about the Monomoy Regional High School Principal position. Since there will no longer be a high school and middle school in each town  the new MRMS  and MRHS positions have been opened. I am certainly a candidate and am looking forward to remaining on as the principal of the new building.  They are not opening the position because the middle school principal and I are leaving but rather to open the process up heading into full regionalization.  The process should be completed by early February.

The Harwich High School Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for the 2014 induction class. Sadly, this will be the last class inducted so please contact me with nominations for consideration.  The nomination process will be closed on November 1st with a March induction.

September 16th week of events

9-16-13 week of events

While we are not permitted to give out specific individual MCAS information yet……. I will say that I presented all students in the class of 2015 and all staff T-Shirts with the term “100% club” on them last week. You will be thrilled with our results, AGAIN!

We are having our “Grand Opening” of our new athletic field this Friday night prior to our 7pm home football opener.  We will be introducing all fall athletes prior to the game as well.  I would invite the entire community to come and support the Sharks.  Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30pm on the field. Parking will be limited so use of the Community Center lot is advised.

HHS will again be offering the PSAT to juniors and sophomores on campus during the day.  This is a real advantage to our students as the research is clear that those who participate in the PSAT score higher on the SAT.  The test will be on Wednesday October 16, 2013 and will be proctored in the HHS cafeteria.  The cost of the test is only $15 and we have 65 slots for juniors and 55 slots for sophomores on a first come first serve basis.  I would encourage all college bound students to take advantage of this opportunity.  If you have any questions please contact your child’s counselor.

HHS School Council will be meeting this Tuesday at 4pm in the library. All new members are welcome.  The meetings are only 90 minutes but the Council is perhaps the most significant advisory board I have. It consists of parents, community members, students, and staff and is involved in policy making for the high school.

Parents please be aware that there are lots of college visits this upcoming week. If your child is in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade they should see their counselor to get a pass prior to the visit.

At a recent School Committee meeting Superintendent Carpenter announced that the district would be opening up both the upcoming MRHS and MRMS principal positions. We had a lengthy conversation prior to the announcement so he could explain his rationale. I will certainly be a candidate for the position and look forward to the process.  Harwich High School has come a long way and the opportunities for the children in Monomoy going forward will make us, without a doubt, the most prestigious high school in Southeastern Massachusetts.
