Grouping and Sorting

Learning Objectives for this Section

After completing this section, participants will be able to:
 A) Sort students into groups to allow for easy differentiated instruction.
 B) Push out files, view student work, and collaborate within student groups.

Teachers place students into groups according to specific goals, activities, and individual needs. Hapara Dashboard makes it easy to translate these groups to the digital environment with the Flexible Color Groupings feature. This feature allow teachers to see the members of each group on their Hapara Dashboard, sort by groups, and push out specific documents to groups. Differentiated and personalized instruction has never been easier.

Why Group and Sort Students?

By grouping students, teachers can make visible the groupings that they use in class, and then choose when to push out Google Drive files based on those groupings.

Creating Flexible Groups

1.  To create flexible groups, select the edit icon located on the far right of each student tile.

2.  When the tile flips, select the color(s). Each color represents a flexible group.  Select the x in the upper right corner to flip the student tile back to its normal view.

Rename Groups
3. To identify the flexible groups, select the icon on the left toolbar.
4. Give each color meaning by typing in the identity of each group.
In this example, we've created some groups based on our 5th Grade Language Arts Book Club (e.g. Divergent, The Giver, etc.) and other groups based on reading levels and IEPs (Mosquitoes, Dragon Flies, etc.).

5. Once a student is assigned to a group, simply hover over the color chip and the group indicator icon will reflect the name of the group(s) that the student belongs to.

Hiding/Showing Flexible Groups
6. With students assigned to groups, you can filter your view of student tiles based on the groups that they are assigned to. Do this by using the Class Group Settings tool, accessible near the top right corner of the dashboard. Deselect the groups you wish to filter out. These groups will temporarily disappear from your Hapara Dashboard view. When you are ready to see all students again, simply reselect all groups by placing a check in the box next to the group name.
7.  Only students in the group(s) selected will be visible.

Learning Activity

Go to Hapara Teacher Dashboard and practice putting your students into small flexible groups using the color chips next to the students' name.

Think of some meaningful groupings in your class(es). What would some of these categories be?

  • Create group categories by color
  • Place your students into a small, flexible groups
  • Sort students by group
  • Hide groups/students

Take a Moment to Reflect

1.  Were you able to create small flexible groups for each of your classes?

2.  Did you manage to view selected group categories and hide others?

3.  How will use small groups in your learning environment?

Tips for Teaching and Learning

When working with or conferencing a group of students, a teacher can display just those students by deselecting all groups and selecting just the desired group. This allows the teacher to easily focus on the members of the group, without needing to search for and be distracted by specific students.

During a conference, the teacher may wish to share one specific student panel in order to display student work.  This can be done by placing one individual student their own group.
