8th Grade Course Selections

8th Grade Transition Information was updated as of January 10, 2018.

School Counselors from the high school will meet with 8th grade students during English classes on either January 25th or 26th. Students will have an opportunity to learn more about course selection, academic advising, and the high school schedule. Students will receive a course selection sheet that will need to be returned to Mrs. Powers or Mr. LaCrosse with a parent signature by March 2nd. Families should use course placement recommendations to make placement selections for foreign language, math, and science. Placement letters will be sent to families at the end of February with the recommendations enclosed. We recognize that this is a quick turn-around to receive a decision about placement recommendations and to complete the course selection sheet during the same week. Please know that discussions about placement and enrollment may continue throughout the spring, and that families should be in touch with high school department chairs to discuss placement recommendations. Students should sign up for the courses that they have placed into initially and changes will be made as discussions continue.

All 8th grade students will take a math placement test on February 1, 2018. Science placement tests will take place during science class on February 2, 2018. French and Spanish placement tests will take place in class in the beginning on February 5 and 6, 2018. RMS students will hear from representatives from math, science, language, music, and art departments at HHS prior to making course selections.

"Curriculum Night" (the 8th grade
parent meeting on course selections) will be at HHS February 13, 2018 at 5:30 PM in the Auditorium. Members of each department at the high school will give an overview of courses offered and the academic program. There will also be a meeting for 8th grade parents of students in special education about the special education transition process. Learning specialists will be in touch with families with additional information.

8th grade students will work in conjunction with School Counselors from HHS to complete course registration in the computer lab on March 6, 2018. We are in the early stages of planning a visit for all 8th grade students to HHS for Spring 2018. Final schedules will be made available over the summer.

If students or parents have any questions about course selections, placements, or high school transition, please do not hesitate to contact the school counseling office at RMS or the 9th grade counselors at HHS, Wendy Kares and Elizabeth Keene.
