DATES TO REMEMBER:
Selected students’ parents notified via e-mail: May 19, 2024
Applications due: April 24, 2024
Apart from the countless musical benefits, learning a musical instrument has been shown to benefit students’ problem-solving skills, social-emotional skills, and their connection to their school. Learning a concert band instrument early in the school year enables students to hit the ground running in concert band. Additionally, your child’s participation in instrumental study will improve the quality of our band program and will make the program more engaging for all participants. If your child has shown any interest in playing a band instrument, this class is the best way to get started. No experience is necessary!
Seating in the class is limited, so interested students and parents must apply to be registered for this section of Music 7. Students who apply will be selected based upon the following criteria:
Interest to participate in the bands at Hanover Area
Ability to shoulder the additional responsibilities of caring for and practicing a band instrument
Potential benefit to selected students’ attendance and participation in school
Balance of the instruments in the class
Students and Parents complete the Application to Participate in Music 7 Instrumental 2024-2025 form.
Students will complete the Instrument Matching Tool.
Students submit the form to a 6th Grade teacher of their choosing by 24 April 2024.
Forms will be collected, considered, and the selected students’ parents will be notified of their children’s enrollment in the Beginning Band class via e-mail by 19 May 2024.
Students may play one of the following concert band instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, or trombone, percussion (drums, mallets, and cymbals). The class will be arranged to provide a balanced sound, so the enrollment of the class will aim for 5 flutes, 5 clarinets, 4 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 3 trombones, and 3 percussion. Percussion instruments will be limited to a maximum of 3 students per class.
Once students have been selected for the instrumental section, your teacher will be in contact with you about instrument rental and borrowing.
Families are encouraged to rent a quality, band instrument. More information will be provided in regards to companies that rent instruments. Families are strongly advised against purchasing instruments from Amazon, Ebay, or Walmart. They are often difficult to play correctly, unrepairable, and do not provide the qualities that beginning students require to be successful. Please, wait to obtain an instrument until after your child has been selected for the class.
Our school has a limited number of instruments for students to borrow and will be available for families who need help providing one. Students who must borrow instruments may not receive their choice of instrument, but will be given an instrument to learn. Students of families who can provide a rental instrument may learn on the instrument of their choice, except for percussion. The teacher will have sole discretion in selecting percussion students. Additionally, instrument changes (e.g. changing from clarinet to flute) after the beginning of the class are at the sole discretion of the teacher.
Just like any class, students will have homework which includes practicing the assigned techniques, scales, and music on their instruments. This practice time should amount to 20 minutes nightly.
Students should also enroll in Junior Band for the school year. Junior Band is a separate class where students of different grades rehearse band music together in preparation for performances throughout the school year including any after-school rehearsals and concerts. These extra events are few, and a schedule will be made available at the start of the next school year.
Please, contact the Music Teacher and Band Director, Mr. Lussier, with any questions. He may be reached at rlussier@hanoverarea.net.
