About Us

The Galena High School Chapter of the National Honor Society strives to uphold all of the Four Pillars of The National Honor Society. These Four Pillars include Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.

Character: Students of good character uphold principles of morality and ethics; are cooperative; demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability; show courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintain a clean disciplinary record.

Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or a higher cumulative average out of a 4.0 scale are eligible for membership. Active members must maintain a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Service: Students in National Honor Society strive to serve their school and community. Volunteer work is completed without compensation with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude.

Membership to the Galena High School chapter of the National Honor Society is open to students who have attended Galena High School for a minimum of one semester and maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. All freshmen students are ineligible for membership until their sophomore year, however we highly encourage freshman students to take freshman year to become involved with their school and community so that they may eligible for membership during their sophomore year.

After the first semester of each academic year, cumulative student grade point averages are reviewed by administration and Candidate Forms are sent to all students meeting the 3.5 grade point average threshold. Eligible students must then complete the Candidate Form which is reviewed by the Faculty Council. (Note: Active members need not re-apply each year.) The Faculty Council then meets to review all submitted Candidate Forms and selects only those students who have demonstrated strengths in all Four Pillars for membership to the National Honor Society. A letter will be sent home informing all candidates about the status of their membership. Selected students will officially become members of the National Honor Society at the National Honor Society Initiation Banquet held in early spring.
