Policies and Procedures

Grades for each nine weeks will be determined by total points accumulated from participation in rehearsals, bellwork, theory assignments, performances, pre-performance rehearsals, quizzes and exams. Points will be totaled and grades will be determined by the following scale:

90%-100% = 1

80% - 89% = 2

70% - 79% = 3

60% - 69% = 4

0% - 59% = 5

There will be tests given throughout the semester on lessons covered in choir.  The point value of these tests will be determined by the amount of information covered.  There will be a major exam at the end of each semester covering material learned throughout the semester.  These will account for no more than 20% of the semester grade.

Quizzes will be given on Music Theory, Vocal Procedures and Music Memorization throughout the semester. These Quizzes will vary in points.

Music Theory will be taught as an integral part of the choir class in order to improve musical concepts and sight singing.  Theory assignments will vary in point value depending on material covered.

Because the success of the choir depends so much on individual effort, it is important that everyone attend ALL rehearsals and make every effort to be on time with all materials. (i.e. music, pencil, folder, assignments, etc.)  10 points will be given each rehearsal day to all students who are prepared and actively participating in the rehearsal.  Points may be withheld if a student does not participate fully in the rehearsal or is a disruption to the class.

Make-up work and late work can be assigned and grades will be determined in a conference with the director.

All performances are mandatory.  Performances and Pre-performance rehearsals account for 40% of your Semester grade.  It is almost impossible to receive a passing grade in choir if you miss both evening Concerts in a semester. An absence from a performance MAY be excused with two weeks prior written notice signed by a parent or guardian.  At that point, an alternate assignment will be given, and will be due the day after the missed concert.  Emergency situations will be taken into consideration.  Concert dates have already been established and are included in the attached calendar.  Please make sure that you get these dates off if you work, because work will not be considered an excuse to miss a performance.

All Choirs will rehearse in the Auditorium after school the day before a scheduled on campus Concert.  THESE REHEARSALS ARE MANDATORY!

These rehearsals are the only time available to work out sound and technical problems with workers from the theater department.  IF YOU MISS THIS REHEARSAL, YOU MAY NOT BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM IN THE CONCERT, AND YOUR SEMESTER GRADE WILL BE LOWERED ACCORDINGLY.  Work is not an excuse to miss this rehearsal.  If you have a test, detention, or Sports conflict, let Mr. DeBusk know in advance so that an agreement may be reached with the conflicting teacher.  Another School function or illness are the only excuses to miss a Performance or Pre-Performance Rehearsal.

Students are expected to act in a professional manner at all times. You are representing Washington High School and the Glendale Union High School District and are expected to display the high standards associated with this school.  The following class rules will be followed in the classroom and during all performances, trips and festivals attended by the choir:

            1.  Follow directions the first time that they are given.

            2.  Be in your seat with your own materials when the bell begins to ring.                                                     Otherwise, you are tardy.

            3.  Show respect for others and their property.

            4.  No hats, electronic games, phones or MP3 players are permitted in the choir room.

            5.  No food, drink, or gum is allowed in the choir room.  Water is permitted.

All discipline and attendance policies in the student handbook will be adhered to. (Parents: Please review the section on attendance and tardies in the student handbook).

This March, a select number of students will be traveling to Los Angeles to participate in the Choir Tour and sing in Disneyland.  To be eligible for this trip, you must be a member in good standing of either Washington Vocal Ensemble or Washington Concert Choir.  You must be passing all classes as of the day of departure, you may not have received a discipline referral during the school year, and you must have paid or fund-raised the total amount for the trip.  (Total cost has not been figured as of yet, but it should be around $325.00 per person including most meals)

The following dates are for concerts that will be performed in the Washington High School Auditorium.  Please mark your calendars accordingly.  All concerts are at 7:00 p.m. and choirs are required to meet in the Choir room at 6:15 p.m.
