Looking Forward to
Spending Time With Our Greatest Friend

By  PastorDrew@growingatfaith.org

All of us have just passed through another Christmas season filled with many happy times. One of the great delights of this season is spending time with beloved friends. We enjoy visiting and being visited by those whom we dearly love. Indeed, while anticipating such a visit, we find ourselves looking forward to the imminent time of delightful friendship.

Recently, such thoughts came to my mind during family devotions. After reading Psalm 84 we focused on the concept of “longing and yearning for the Lord” (verse 2). We were refreshed by the basic truth that this refers to our heart-desire of looking forward to spending personal time with the Lord in His Word and prayer.

Some other Scriptures that speak of this same longing are:

Ps. 27:4- “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek;  that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to meditate in His temple.”

Ps. 42:1- “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God.”

Ps. 63:1- “O God, Thou art my God; I shall seek Thee earnestly;  My soul thirsts for Thee, my flesh yearns for Thee, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

Also, we were thrilled while remembering that our Lord and Savior looks forward to spending time with us. This is amply evidenced in His oft-repeated, gracious invitation to come for the purpose of meeting with Him (Ps. 62:8; Is. 55:1, 2; Mt. 11:28-30). The Lord God, who delights in His people (Ps. 149:4), is delighted when His people come with the purpose of spending heart-to-heart time with Him in His Word and prayer.

Dear friends, as we enter 2002, let us excel in spending time with our Greatest Friend--the Lord Jesus Christ. Pencil in special time with the Lord every day as well as other times throughout the month. Then, let us look forward to those times of intimate, delightful friendship as we pour out our heart in prayer (Ps. 62:8) and listen to His heart in His Word (Jeremiah 15:16).

Because Jesus, the Christ, came and is coming again (!),
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Drew
