What can I do over the summer to help my child prepare for Year 2?

*Revise all phonics sounds learnt in Year 1 using flashcards to keep it fresh. This is something that needs daily practise to retain it!

*Read as often as possible. As with the phonics, fluency in reading is built up over time and with frequent practise. Long gaps can cause fluency to regress.

*Practise number bonds to 10 and 20 (e.g. 0+10 = 10, 1+9=10, 2+18=20).

*Practise adding and taking away mentally and using a numberline to jump fowards and backwards. Start with 2 digit numbers and one digit numbers, e.g. 23+5, 38+4.

*Count forwards and backwards in 2s 5s 10s. If you search for Scratch Garden counting by 2, Counting by 5 and Counting by 10 there are some lovely songs to help with this.

*Practise writing your full name in joined up handwriting. Again, when practised children can maintain neat handwriting.

*Something all children find really tricky is quarters! The main points here are that for something (a shape of number of objects) to be in quarters, there needs to be 4 equal parts. If there are 4 parts, but they are not equal- this isn't quarters. If there are 3 parts- this isn't quarters! Practise finding quarters of different amounts using fruit, pennies, pencils, toy cars etc. Remember- there has to be 4 equal groups or parts! Draw and cut out differnet shapes and see if you can put them into quarters- is there more than one way to do this?
