Writing & Literacy Center

“Read everything you can get your hands on. Read until words become your friends. Then when you need to find one, they will jump into your mind, waving their hands for you to pick them. You can select whichever you like, just like a captain choosing a stickball team.”

The Writing Center at Wade Hampton

In the Writing Center students are able to bring ANY piece of writing for peer tutor to read or listen to. This writing might be an essay that is due in a class, or it might be a poem the student wants to submit to a competition. The associate will make suggestions for the piece of writing, and then it will be up to the author to accept the suggestions.

Furthermore, students can celebrate writing through the Writing Center. They are able to participate in contests throughout the year as well as workshops and events such as poetry slams.

The Writing Center also sponsors professional development for teachers and training for the peer tutors who volunteer in The Center. Students who seek and receive help in The Writing Center will become better writers, perform better on standardized tests, be more creative, and be ready for the world of work or post-secondary education.
