Health & Wellness is 20% of the overall grade in AFJROTC. Each Friday, cadets will run 1 to 1.5 miles, perform as many sit-up & push-ups as they can in 1 minute. Time permitting, cadets will participate in a team sport. Participation is part of the grade as well as wearing the Wellness gear issued to each cadet.
Grading Standard! Included in your handbook!
Run will count for 60 points (if you walk you get 50 pts), wearing the appropriate issued PT uniform earns you 25 points (-6.25 (-12.5 if only one set of PT gear issued) for each item missing), and completing the exercises will earn you 15 points. Refusal to participate will earn you a "Zero" for that day. Bleachers are for individuals that complete the run, those that do not participate can stand 5 feet from the bleachers.
Missed Wellness days: If you're absent Friday, it is your responsiblility to stay afterschool to make up the day, before the next scheduled PT day. Afterschool you will run 1 mile, complete 1 min of push-ups and 1 min of sit-ups, in PT Gear, and then you will be free to leave. It is your responsiblity to provide any required transportation. If PT time is not made-up, a zero will remain in the grade book.
During the week of Midterms, we will have cadets complete the fitness requirements as if it were their final, so they can monitor their progress. IT DOES NOT COUNT AS A MAJOR GRADE, just lets cadets get a feel for how far they have come.
Final Exams will be administered in Mid November and April, make-ups will be permitted prior to end of the semester, if students are not available on either of these days, the last run and exercise information recorded will be used to calculate their final exam grade for the grade book. Students should attempt to better themselves each week to become stronger and healthier. Taking a week off to "take it easy" could end up as a student's last recorded effort and may be detrimental to a final grade.
*** PREP for AFJROTC Fitness Exam. Cadets should strive to get as many repetitions in a minute as possible (Sit-up & Push-ups); and faster than when we started at the beginning of the semester (1-mile Run). Scoring 80% or higher earns cadets a bronze, silver or gold star on their PT ribbon. (NEW CHART IN HANDBOOK!)
Cadet's handbooks have the standards for both boys and girls by age for them to strive toward. Cadets will not improve by just working on the fitness requirements on Fridays ONLY. Cadets are briefed to work on their fitness at home as often as possible.
Any cadet that has a medical issue documented by a doctor, needs to provide a copy to the school nurse and to the AFJROTC Instructor team. If cadets need the use of inhalers for running or any activity, it is their responsibility to bring it to class, and keep it with them. If they have one that is not documented with the school nurse, it may be confiscated during the roving metal detection systems.
If a cadet is absent, they will have to make arrangements to make up the class missed, before or after-school as outlined by the school/district policy.
Community Service is an important part of AFJROTC. We have several opportunities each year for cadets to earn hours towards their Service Ribbon as well as our unit goals. Each Cadet should strive to earn a minimum of 8 community service hours each. We have Adopt-A-Hwy that will be completed as determined by the weather, cadets are required to wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and long sleeves for their protection; reflective vests and gloves will be provided. First period cadets and volunteers (2nd Semester) raising the flag each morning will earn credit and 3rd/4th period cadets are also responsible for lowering of the US and State flag in the front of the school building each day.
Additionally, we will volunteer our time, one Thursday per month, during each class period at Harvest Hope Food Bank. Participation counts as community service hours and/or grade. Cadets are not allowed to wear open toe shoes. Clothes may get dusty or dirty during this period, therefore do not wear something that you can not wash easily. Suggest wearing PT Sweat Shirt, jeans, & sneakers.
Any additional volunteer hours students perform with their churches, outside organizations, or other school organizations can be added toward the individual goals. Just bring us a signed note/document to be added into our WINGS program.
