Unit 4: Human Growth and Development

Unit Objectives:

At the end of the unit, the students will be able to:

1. Analyze how culture, family, peers, and media influence beliefs and behaviors associated with sexuality.
2.  Evaluate the cultures influence on gender roles, gender identity, and sexual orientation. 
3.
Describe the health, skills, and knowledge required before entering a relationship.
4. Demonstrate effective ways to share feelings and strategies to resolve interpersonal conflicts.

5. Recognize the qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships and predict how they might affect one’s mental, emotional, physical, and social health.

6. Identify the difference between appropriate affection and inappropriate advances and realize the possible consequences of those behaviors.
7. Locate each body part of the male and female reproductive organs and also explain their role in the body.

8. Identify appropriate care and common disorders of the reproductive organs

9. Examine how alcohol and drugs hinder healthy decisions and understand risks of pregnancy and STDs/STIs increase when one or both parties involved are under the influence.

10. Analyze the physical, emotional, and social problems a male and female experience during a teenage pregnancy and understand that each person must accept responsibilities for choices made during intercourse.

11. Explain and understand the process of conception, prenatal development, and birth.

12.  Describe the most common STDs/STIs, their symptoms, treatment, and resources for diagnosis and care.

13. Describe contraceptives that are commonly used, how they work, and their effectiveness.
