United Church Women (UCW)

The purpose of the UCW is to unite the women of the congregation for the total mission of the church, and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty to Jesus Christ in Christian Witness, Study, Fellowship and Service. 2002 was the 40th Anniversary year of United Church women in Canada and at Grace United Church. A banner was made to celebrate the anniversary and is presently hanging in the church sanctuary.

The UCW holds six general meetings a year. They usually meet on the third Monday of February, April, May, September and October and on the second Monday of December. The April meeting is a Spring Thankoffering and the October meeting is a Fall Thankoffering. Often the September meeting is a potluck supper.

There are three UCW units which meet each month and also have their own programs as well as contributing to the general UCW. The Amity Unit usually meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 1st Monday of the month. The Elizabeth Unit usually meets at 10:00 a.m. on the 1st Tuesday of the month. The South-end Unit usually meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 1st Tuesday of the month.

The UCW participates in many programs and projects. Would you please save the following items for charity:

  • Please donate used postage stamps to our UCW. Please do not tear the stamps or peel them off envelopes. The money received from sale of these stamps is sent to Leprosy Mission.
  • Please donate the cash register tapes from Sobey's grocery stores to our UCW. Please circle the total amount on each tape. Monies raised through the saving of these tapes helps to support UCW and church related projects.
  • Please donate the labels from Campbell's soups to UCW. Proceeds from these labels go to Landmark East School in Wolfville, NS.
  • Please donate used eye glasses to UCW to be sent to Operation Eyesight.
  • Please save your small change for the "Fellowship of the Least Coin". This money is sent to the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada for deserving projects around the world.

The UCW Coverdale Foundation Spring Project collects personal care items, "bars of soap, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.", for Coverdale Foundation, which assists women who have been in conflict with the law. Each spring, our UCW asks their members to bring their donations to the Spring General Meeting. If you would like to help with this project, you may leave donated items prior to April 16th in the basket at the back of the sanctuary marked Coverdale Foundation.

The UCW Alice Housing Autumn Project collects cleaning supplies, "items such as dish washing detergent, household cleaners, etc.", for Alice Housing. Donations of good used clothing will also be welcome. Alice Housing provides safe and supportive housing for women and their children fleeing abuse. Our UCW asks their members to bring their donations to the Fall General Meeting. However, if you would like to help with this project, donated items maybe be left in the basket at the back of the sanctuary prior to the meeting.

UCW Fish Chowder Luncheon

The UCW spring fundraiser is its UCW Fish Chowder Luncheon. Traditionally it has been held on a Lenten Friday; however, more recently, it has been held on the Lenten Saturday before Palm Sunday. Indeed, the 2011 Event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Also, there will be a craft and bake sale. Tickets cost $3.00/child and $7.00/adult.

A delicious luncheon offish chowder or hotdogs, rolls, pies, cakes, coffee, tea & juice was served in the lower hall.

Canadian Church Calendars are available from the UCW during Coffee Fellowship throughout autumn and early winter.

On our Anniversary Sunday , the UCW gave Flowers and Anniversary Cake to the congregation in celebration of Grace United’s anniversary. Happy Anniversary Grace United!

United Church Men

The Men's Breakfast Group meets at 8:00 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month, except June, July and August. All men are welcome to join in the fellowship, growth and service. This group is subdivided into five groups, each of which takes its turn preparing breakfast for the meeting. Each meeting includes a short devotional and often features a guest speaker.

The Men's Group also puts on a Fundraising Supper each spring and fall.
