Mrs. Jackson's Class

November 16, 2018

This week in kindergarten, we learned about Thanksgiving. We learned that Thanksgiving is a time to spend with the people we care about and to reflect on all of the things we are thankful for. We also discussed some of the foods people eat at a Thanksgiving feast. We made crafts, class books, and a special snack in honor of this holiday.

In handwriting, we learned V and W.

In phonics, our new sight words were “at” and “to.” We read a challenging new book to practice these words. Please encourage your child to blend through words as he/she is sounding them out (C, CA, CAT). Our letter study was on T. We also practiced identifying sounds at the beginning and end of words.

In writing, we are working on listening for all of the sounds in the words we write. The kids are also working on planning their words before putting them on the page.

In math, we started a unit on sorting and classifying. This week, we learned how to “classify” a group of items into “categories” based on similar characteristics. We also practiced using tallies as we do this.

Our vocabulary words this week were farmer, market, ingredient, combine, and nutritious.

The kids are doing a great job with their sight words! Thank you for practicing these at home! I know a lot of people keep their sight word ring in their folder. I would encourage you to find a safe place at home to keep this. As we add more words to the ring, it gets heavier. The kids have a tendency to carry their folders upside down and dump out the contents and some word rings have gotten misplaced/mixed up because of this.

Thank you to those of you who have returned your RSVP and/or materials for our Gingerbread House event! It is a very special day for the kids, and we love having you at school to help us celebrate the holiday season.

There is no school next Thursday or Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Have a good weekend!
