• Week 27: Community

This week in kindergarten, we learned about our community.  The kids learned that many of the places in a community can be organized into three categories:  places where we buy things, places where we go for help, and places where we live.  The kids discussed different kinds of stores and each designed a store of their own.  They had a lot of fun turning their drawings into models today using paint and milk cartons.  We also discussed where we live and how we are part of our neighborhood, city, state, country, and continent.  We ended the week by learning about a few symbols of our country.

We enjoyed some special presentations this week!  We had a dental hygienist come talk to us about choosing foods that are healthy for our teeth and proper brushing techniques.  The Gretna High School choirs came and performed for us as well.  The kids loved watching them sing and dance—they were definitely all dancing in their own seats!

    In handwriting, we learned d.

In math, we finished our unit on addition and subtraction.

Our vocabulary words this week were admire, community, deliver, schedule, and workers.

In phonics, our new sight words were look and with.  We read a new book to practice these.  We also worked on identifying words with the same beginning and ending sounds.  Our letter study was on the letter E, and the kids practiced listening for it at the beginning and middle of words.  Finally, we continue to work on manipulating sounds in words by omitting beginning or ending sounds.

In writing, we continued to work on How-To writing.

The kids will start typing in their lunch numbers next week.  Please continue to review these at home to help this go more smoothly during lunch time.  In addition to memorizing the number, it is important to have the kids practice finding the numbers on the keypad.  You can use an old calculator or phone to practice this.  If you lost the paper with your child’s lunch number on it, please let me know and I will get his/her number to you.

Next week is Read Across America week.  I sent home a note yesterday with the different dress up days.  I have also added these to the Bloomz calendar and the calendar on the website.  If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home, please feel free to send them to school with your child next week.  I will send them back home as we read them.  Don’t forget to label them with your name!

    Have a good weekend!
