HPE and Sport at Good Shepherd Catholic College

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome staff, parents and students to the new HPE and Sport Website. The aim of this site is to communicate important trial dates, competition/carnival information and celebrate student achievement in sport at Good Shepherd Catholic College. The HPE department is extremely excited about the launch of this website, as it is part of our vision to encourage the physical potential of all students.

Sport is significantly important for the physical growth and development of our students, and enhancing their social, emotional and cognitive dimensions of health. We are passionate about educating students of this multidimensional nature of health and physical activity, in the context of a diverse and changing society. Furthermore, we seek to provide opportunities for students to learn about, and practice ways of adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life.

2016 Athletics Carnival

It has been an exciting and eventful term in relation to school sport. On the 2nd June we held our Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Student attendance at the carnival was one of the best we’ve seen in years, and students are to be commended for their participation and behaviour. This demonstrates the true spirit and pride that students at Good Shepherd Catholic College have in representing their houses and school at such events.

Congratulations to all students, but particularly to those who placed in an event. It was an extremely successful day with students breaking both personal bests and school records.

On the 29th of February, the school celebrated the most important week in the calendar for the HPE department, HPE week 2016. HPE week is an initiative supported by ACHPER (Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation) to raise awareness of the important role HPE plays in school communities and student well being.

HPE week for 2016, created a very positive environment here at GSCC, enabling all students to socialise with peers from various year levels, develop teamwork and communication skills and most importantly, participate in physical activity. Thank you to all that have assisted and participated in this week's activities, and a huge thank you to ACHPER for supporting such an important initiative.

Sport improves NAPLAN results

An article has been released from sports scientist and Olympic running coach, Professor Dick Telford of the University of Canberra's Research Institute for Sport. His study has found that there is an inextricible link between sport and NAPLAN scores.

"The children who had the extra sport and spent that time doing an extra 90 minutes of proper, well-qualified instructed PE improved their NAPLAN scores, particularly their numeracy, and particularly in boys, improved their scores by eight to 10 points, which was quite a lot – a 25 per cent improvement."
