Visual Supports
Visual supports provide students with increased structure and organization in their school day and provide an opportunity to develop students ability to use time more efficiently. Visual supports also increase a students' independence, sense of responsibility, and may increase on-task behavior and productivity.
When?
Students who have difficulty with organization
Students who have difficulty with time management
Students who wander off task
Students who exhibit poor executive and decision making skills
Students who have difficulty with unstructured time
Students who have difficulty transitioning
How?
Visual schedules can vary a great deal and may be more or less complex
Use pictures, words, or objects to represent periods of the day, subjects, tasks and transitions
The schedule may be placed in a central location for the entire class or for individual schedules, on the student’s desk/bookshelf/binder
Some schedules may have movable images and graphic or visual elements that can be moved from a “start” side to a “finish” side
Other schedules may be more static without moving visual elements, but instead be laminated so a dry erase marker can be used on them to check each task, or a page that is copied with a new schedule to write on each day
