"Should wiretapping be legal?"
The sixth grade ELA program focuses on increasing students' abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The program is focused on developing the writing process and reading strategies through the use of a student portfolio. The 6th grade portfolio concentrates on three specific writing genres: report, recounts, and persuasive essay. Reading selections from the Prentice Hall Literature text, as well as selected novels, provide opportunities for students to address current Massachusetts' standards in ELA as well as expectations of MCAS and PARCC testing. Students will also have the opportunity to use technologies which have been outlined in the Common Core Standards, and are taught Digital Citizenship through Common Sense Media .
Homework will be given to students every Friday. It consists of a Daily Writing packet (2 sheets, 2 sided). Each side will be due on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday- in chronological order. These align to the Grade 6 standards. Students are also encouraged to read nightly for at least 20 minutes.
Our Social Studies unit of study in grade 6 is World Geography. Students will study the continents of Europe, South America, Asia and Africa through the Five Themes of Geography. There will be 1 project (home or school based) for each unit and homework will be assigned every week. The homework system will work as follows:
Every Friday your child will receive the homework for the following week. There are two assignments
Weekly Skills- Weekly skills are aligned with the state and national standards for sixth grade. It is divided by continent and coincides with what we are doing in class. There will be four assignments, one due each day...Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday. There is usually a reference map to go with it and sometimes there is a bit of outside research.
Daily Geography - Daily Geography is also aligned with the state and national standards. This assignment can be done any time during the week and should be completed by Friday. It also has a reference map or chart.
I am aware that students may have many activities during the school week after school. This should allow you and your child to decide the best plan of action to complete the homework.
Also, I am available EVERY Monday after school until 2:30 to help with homework, or any other Social Studies related work. There is also a homework club that meets in the library every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday until 3:15.
