WELCOME to Grade 8 Ocean House Math!
It is going to be a fantastic year in Math this year. We have so many resources to provide for the many different ways students learn.
Out primary resource is a math program called Big Ideas. Each student will be assigned a hard cover math book to bring home, a soft cover workbook which will travel back and forth, and of course, their chrome book. The whole math program is designed to be used online, and this is the way students will do most of their homework, quizzes and tests. The chrome book is a very important part of every learning day!
As parents and students, you all might find that average grades are lower then you might be in the habit of seeing, but this is OK. Homework is designed to give immediate feedback to a student, and then they can retry the problem for partial credit. Tests and Quizzes are also online. My personal policy will be that students can stay after school on my extra help night (Wednesdays) and make up a failed assessment on a paper test/quiz ... with the better grade counting. The object is for students to 'know the math', and I will do all in my power to help them reach that goal!
We will also use a few other programs in math class to assist the learning. Khan Academy will occasionally be assigned or suggested to supplement learning. We will sometimes have fun with Kahoots, and extra practice with IXL. I also encourage students to google a topic they may be having difficulty with, as another voice can help the learning.
