Welcome to Mrs. Dawson's Portal

Our music classes develop musical skills to instill lifelong love and appreciation of all kinds of music and prepare children for future musical opportunities in Middle School and beyond. Each grade level progressively builds upon skills and knowledge mastered in earlier grades.

We learn visually, kinesthetically and aurally by using a variety of activities to focus on each musical concept.  We are fortunate to have a spacious classroom equipped with musical instruments and interractive Smartboard technology.  We sing, move, listen, read and play instruments.

Music is a piece of art that goes in the ears and straight to the heart!

A word about the curriculum. . .

In Kindergarten, we explore musical comparatives (Loud/Soft; Fast/Slow; High/Low). We listen to, move to and describe music. We develop our sense of steady beat and develop singing voices.

In grades one - five, we learn solfege (so, mi, la, do, re etc.) with hand signs. Using our voices, bodies and instruments, we learn how to read, write and perform rhythms and pitches. We learn through our play.

Choir is made up of any 4th and 5th graders who love to sing.  Rehearsals are after school on WEDNESDAYS from 2:30-3:30. Our first rehearsal is Wednesday, September 27. We strive for excellence in singing and to make others glad through our music!

My background. . .

I have had the pleasure of teaching at Royal Manor Elementary for 18 years! I hold a Bachelor of Music Degree from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Degree from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music with an emphasis in flute performance. I earned my teaching certificate from OSU. During these 18 years, I have studied the three main approaches to music education. I hold a Kodaly certificate from Capital University, an Orff level one certificate from The Ohio State University where I also studied Dalcroze. I love sharing music with young people and am always learning how to better help young students through the art of music. I continue to sing and play the flute in church. I teach flute privately and love playing the piano for personal enjoyment. I also enjoy spending time with my husband and two children, Matthew (11) and Allie (8).
