Lesson 2.1 Place the First Digit

When you divide, you can use estimation or place value to place the first digit of the quotient.

___________

6 / 1,266

1. Estimate 1,200 divided by 6 = 200, so the first digit of the quotient is in the hundreds place.

2. Divide the hundreds.

3. Divide the tens.

4. Divide the ones.

So, 1,266 divided by 6 = 211

Since 211 is close to the estimate, 200, the answer is reasonable.

Lesson 2.2 Divide by 1-digit divisors

Lesson 2.3 Division with 2-digit divisors

(this was pictures and we skipped this lesson)

Lesson 2.4 Partial quotients

Hint- students should know multiples of the numbers using the number (divisor) by 10, 5, 2 or/and 1.

****How to check your division problem.

step 1 - Take the quotient and multiply by the divisor.

step 2 If there is a remainder it must be added.

Example: Step 1: (quotient * divisor) 168*6 = 1008

Step 2: (add to the product of 1st step your remainder) 1008 + 2 = 1010

Mid-Chapter Checkpoint **Quiz

Lesson 2.5 Estimate with 2-Digit Divisors

Step 1: Look at the divisor and round to a base 10 number. Example 42 was rounded to 40.

Step 2: Look at dividend and determine one number below the original and one number above. Example original number is 2,374 so a multiple of 40 that is close and just below would be 2,000 and another multiple of 40 that is close and just above is 2,400.

Step 3: Solve each of the problems

The estimate for your answer will be between the two. Example your estimate is between 50 and 60.

Lesson 2.6 Divide by 2-Digit Divisior

Lesson 2.7 Interpret the Remainder

3 ways:

1. Depending on the questions sometimes the answer will need you to turn the remainder into a fraction.

2. Drop the remainder

3. Add one to the quotient to include the remainder.

Lesson 2.8 Adjust Quotients

This is when you use the first digit of the estimate and it is either too high or too low and you need to adjust the first digit that you use.

Lesson 2.9 Problem Solving * Division

Standards

The following are the standards that we will be addressing in Chapter 2. Please let me know if you or your child has trouble with any of the assignments.

Common Core Standards

Lesson 2.1,2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9

5.NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays and/or area models.

5.NF.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator. Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g. by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
