Introduction

Material Covered in This Module

Welcome to your online learning module!

Using this module's embedded content and assessment tools, you will learn how to resolve the most common technology problems that arise when using your student laptop, the Lenovo Yoga. Troubleshooting common problems doesn't have to be difficult--in fact, it's actually rather simple. The majority can be solved by regularly and properly installing Windows 8.1 system updates. Installing appropriate updates not only solves most Lenovo laptop problems but can also prevent future errors, so the update installation procedure is one of the most important things you can learn in the ongoing care of your student device. It will also help you as you assist your fellow students with fixing glitches in and out of class.

To that end, this online module has been designed specifically to teach you how to properly install Windows 8.1 system updates.

Let's get started!

How to Use This Module

The three learning blocks in this module are meant to be followed sequentially (that is, complete block 1 before moving on to block 2, and so on). It's best to navigate through the introductory material and module blocks by using the navigation prompts found at the bottom of every page. There you'll find a page back and page forward button. Additionally, users can navigate to major module pages using the persistent sidebar navigation links.

If at any point in the module you run into an issue, please let me know by commenting on the Questions & Contacts page. I'll reply as soon as possible.

Intended Audience

This module is intended for members of George Walton Academy's student technology team, the Tech Dawgs. However, any GWA student with a Lenovo Yoga device running on the Windows 8.1 operating system will find the module's content valuable, as would teachers with a faculty laptop. To complete the module's assessments, learners will need access to their GWA Office 365 account.

The lesson blocks in this module have not been designed for a K-12 classroom but are meant to function as a practical, stand-alone tutorial for Tech Dawgs team members. As such, corresponding standards have been pulled from the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students, not the Georgia Performance Standards.

Tech Dawgs may complete this online module individually or in pairs. If you plan to partner up with someone, please email me to let me know so I can accurately count your combined assessments.

Main Topics and Relation to Previous Knowledge

This module will cover the following topics:
  • Preparing the Lenovo Yoga laptop for the Windows 8.1 update installation procedure
  • Checking for available Windows 8.1 system updates
  • Selecting appropriate Windows 8.1 updates for installation
  • Installing selected Windows 8.1 updates
You do not need any previous knowledge regarding Windows 8.1 system updates in order to successfully complete this module. You will, however, need to possess a comfortable familiarity with the Lenovo Yoga laptop. Also, it might be helpful to think back on the training you completed in the summer of 2015 when you first received your student device. These sessions covered proper care and best practices concerning the Lenovo Yoga device, a brief introduction to Windows 8.1, and an introduction to the Office 365 platform. The information you learned in these sessions is considered a prerequisite for this online learning module and will help you as you progress through the above topics.
