Palestinian Authority (West Bank and Gaza Strip): General Information

•Female Status: Typically the same as many other Arab nations with women subject to
some violence and abuse.  Women have legal voting rights and many job
opportunities but are still a minority in the work force.  Many of these
issues are second business/ unattainable at the present due to Palestinian
  Israeli conflict.

•Infectious Diseases: NA

•Religion and Government: Government recognizes freedom of religion/ worship.
Palestine consists mostly of Sunni Muslims but also
Christians and other groups.  There is much conflict between
Palestinian Muslims and Israeli Jews, however.

•Refugee Problem:  There exists a refugee problem since the 1949 Arab-Israeli War and
today there are refugees located in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the West
         Bank, and Gaza Strip.

•Media:  The Palestinian Media Watch is an Israeli based organization that monitors
Palestinian media and schoolbooks to watch any anti-Israeli propaganda or hate
talk particularly from Fatah or Hamas.

•Drug Issues: Illegal narcotics and drugs do not appear to be the central focus of
governmental policies, however they still exist.  Some suggest that
instability and conflicts of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict create this
problem while ignoring it at the same time.  Other reasons are similar to
those of other countries: banal, money, etc.

•Human Trafficking: Human Trafficking exists in Palestine as much as the illegal drug
trade but unfortunately is undermined due to the Palestinian-Israeli
           War.

•Current Events: 1) Liberation of the Aqsa Mosque in Israel

            4) Peace Talks.
Palestinians are beginning to see a stalemate or an impasse with the Oslo peace talks.  They wish to see more action than debates and discussion.
