1. The Ottoman Empire deserves special attention due to its importance and influence for almost 600 years over large geographical areas.  Analyze what you believe to be the empire's greatest strengths and weaknesses. These issues do not need to have been present throughout the whole history of the Empire. If they were not, you need to indicate when a specific topic under discussion began or ended.

2.  The rulers of the Ottoman Empire, along with others, attempted to reform and change the Empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Discuss the reform platforms.  What was successful and what was not and why?  What role did nationalism play in the empire by the early years of the 20th century.

3. Few would dispute that the relationship between the Middle East and the 'West' historically still influences international relations today. For this essay, I want you to trace the major phases in the association between the West and the Middle East from 16th through the 19th century. Make sure to highlight changes and similarities in this relationship during this period. You are not confined to discussing events which occurred only within the territorial boundaries of the Middle East since the Ottoman Empire and trade and commerce extend far beyond these.
4.  Most recently, the class has focused on WWI and the settlements immediately after the war.  However, the European nations, and England and France especially, had already been intricately invovled in the Middle East.  Discuss the role of European nations from 1870 to 1930, highlighting what you believe to be the most important developments.

Students are welcome to propose an essay topic of their own, but it must be approved by the professor.
