Greek Drama Paper

DUE: October 13 in class

For the following paper, you must choose to read either Sophocles', Oedipus at Colonus (written c. 407/06 BCE) Sophocles' Antigone (performed in 441 BCE), or Aristophones' Lysistrata (performed in 411 BCE) and answer the questions below. Your paper should be about 4-5 pages, typed, double-spaced. It must include correct grammar, syntax and referencing.

Evaluation will be based upon 1) your understanding of the themes of the work as evidenced by a clear, concise summary, 2) your ability to relate the work to ideas from your text, lecture, and discussion. Mere restating of the information from class, with no demonstration of original thinking on your part will result in a low grade.

Late work will be penalized 10% per day accept in cases of extended illness or family emergency.

1.Provide a brief summary of the material you read emphasizing the themes which the author presents.

2. What are the relationships between the themes and ideas in this play and those in society, politics or intellectual activity mentioned in your text, lectures, or discussion?  In other words, what was Sophocles or Aristophanes trying to say to his audience?  What themes or messages do you think an Athenian first seeing this play performed would have noticed? Pay attention to when the play was first performed.
