Bill C-262

Deb Endean's grade seven class sent MP Dan Albas a message to vote in favour of Bill C-262 which would support the implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and help provide legislative framework for use in Canada.

On September 29th, students at the secondary participated in Orange Shirt Day- a recognition of Residential School survivors and awareness of Aboriginal Issues in Canada. Students did a workshop called 'The Blanket Exercise'. It demonstrates pre-contact Canada and what happened with the arrival of Europeans and the impact of colonialism. Highlighted in the exercise is the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People as a positive step towards respectful engagement with indigenous people. Canada was one of the last countries to sign the Declaration. To ensure the Bill is passed and to empower the students by giving them a voice, we choose to stand up be pro-active.
