Lent 6 - Intercession

On the topic of Intercession:

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free…Michelangelo

Do you sometimes wonder why we keep praying when wrong is so overwhelming?  I find it hard to believe that God sees perfection where I see only brokenness or beauty where I see only ugliness.

Michelangelo was asked why he continued to pound on a large block of marble.  He replies,  In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hue away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.

It is God that formed that block of marble and God that shaped the angel it held. It was God who gave Michelangelo the eye to see it and put a hammer in his hand to reveal it.  You are created by God and He sees you clearly as you stand before Him, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. God delights in your beauty as he breaks away the stone of sin and shame that entombs you.

Walk down the street in this neighborhood. What do you see? Do you see only a woman clinging to a shopping cart?  Look across the parking lot at lines of people waiting to be fed and volunteers that feed them. What do you see? Look at the person holding up the line at the store. What do you see? Watch the rich man guard his riches and confident stride on by. What do you see? GOD sees his perfect creation entombed in stone hewn by sin.

Waiting... God waits for his children to notice, to really see and have compassion for those who stand nearby.  God waits for you. Scripture tell us Ephesians 6:18 With this in mind, be alert, always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
