Getting To Know Pastor Pat

Andy Park wrote the song, In the Secret [© 1995 Mercy / Vineyard Publishing (Admin. by Music Services)] with this chorus: I want to know You, I want to hear Your voice, I want to know You more, I want to touch You, I want to see Your face, I want to know You more.

Ever since my own Great Awakening at the age of 25 this has been my theme. I have wanted, and still want, to know God more. And I believe that the primary means by which God has chosen to reveal the nature,
character and desires of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is through the Word. It has been the urging at the core of my being to know God through the study of that Word.

Eugene Peterson, in his translation, The Message, records Paul’s words to Timothy:

There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is Godbreathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing
our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

I take from this text the importance of, as one of my Bible school profs used to often repeat, reading, studying and inwardly digesting the Word of God. One of the ways it marks me is the knowledge that, if my study of the Bible only affirms what I already believe… then I’m not studying the right parts of the Bible. It is meant to show truth, expose rebellion, correct mistakes, and train up in God’s way. I believe that I am called to mature faith, sanctified by the work of the Holy Spirit, and equipped for the tasks of God. And I believe that my call as pastor is to share that conviction with others in such a way that it will become their conviction as well. It is my job to equip the saints for their own participation in this Gospel of grace. It is a joy to me to be able to effect the things that bless God!  such a conviction, to see that light come on in others. May it always continue to bless me to be doing
