Our Sports
Athletics are a source of pride for Gaston County Schools and the community. Our teams consistently capture county, regional and state championships.
The district offers 10 sports at the middle school level and 13 for high school students. Athletic programs in Gaston County Schools emphasize academic success in the classroom, student attendance in school and good sportsmanship on and off the field. All student athletes must be in good academic standing and adhere to county and state regulations in academics and attendance.
GCS high school teams participate in state-approved conferences against schools in the surrounding area. Ashbrook, Forestview, Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point and Stuart W. Cramer compete in the Big South 3-A conference. Bessemer City, Cherryville, East Gaston and Highland participate in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference.
All 11 middle schools compete in a Gaston County conference.
Our Philosophy
Interscholastic athletics are an integral part of the total education process and thus play a major role in the philosophy of Gaston County Schools. Athletics provide an opportunity for students to utilize critical thinking skills, as well as put into practice those basic tenets of cooperation and personal responsibilities.
Gaston County Schools promote attitudes and practices that keep winning in perspective and will look unfavorably upon any activities that would compromise the efforts of good sportsmanship and ethical athletic practices. It is the belief of Gaston County Schools that full participation be allowed to all students when competitive conditions exits, thus endorsing a wide participation policy.
