Hey everyone! It is officially cold and flu season. Every day this week we are going to have a different tip to help you stay healthy. Today's tip is: Get lots of rest. Your body needs an average of 10 hours of sleep a night- even more when it is trying to fight off an infection. If you don't get enough sleep, your body doesn't have enough time or energy to keep your immune system strong. Without adequate sleep, the immune system doesn't get a chance to rebuild, and it becomes weak which means you are more likely to get sick if you are exposed to a virus.

East News 8/18/2014

Open houses are coming up over the next two weeks!  These evenings are designed for parents to meet their students' teachers and get a general overview of the course and classroom procedures.

For 6th grade parents the event is Tuesday (8/19) evening beginning at 7 pm in the cafeteria.  We will have a brief general meeting where you will hear about all of the 'related arts' courses and then parents will follow students' remaining schedules through all of the academic courses.  We typically conclude around 8:30 pm.

For 7th & 8th grade parents, your open house is Monday, August 25.  We will not start with a general meeting, you will simply start with your child's first academic class (either 1st or 2nd period).  This will allow for a slightly longer visit with the teachers and we should be done around 8:15 pm.

While students are allowed to attend, the evening is designed for parents.  Hope to see you all there!

Communication:  We have updated our GMSE Calendar (all of the non-athletic building calendar events):

East News 8/14/2014
Thank you for sharing your children with us! The 1st two days of school have gone very well and your children have been positive, eager and excited to be back. They add the energy to the building as only middle school students can. Mrs. Beaver (our assistant principal) and I will have met with all of the students by the end of the day tomorrow. Our discussion included: dress code, attendance, technology usage, bullying, and academic effort so every student knows what the expectations at GMSE are. Here are some of the highlights so you can reinforce our message at home.

Dress Code: Shirts must have sleeves, no undergarment may show, skirts/shorts must be long enough so that your fingertips (when your arms hang normally to your side) cannot touch your skin, no holes in pants above the fingertip length, no yoga pants unless they are covered with a shirt/skirt/shorts that comply with the fingertip rule.

Attendance: Students should be in school as much as possible, bring a doctors note to school if they are seen, students signing in prior to 9:45 are considered tardy, between 9:46 and 2:45 will be counted as absent 1/2 day absent, after 2:46 is considered an early dismissal.

Technology: No cell phones/iPods/iPads or other electronic devices without the express permission of the classroom teacher, no earbuds/music in the hallways or in the cafeteria at lunch, safe, appropriate use of technology at recess is permitted.

Bullying: How you treat others matters either at school or at home; either face to face or on-line. No bullying or maltreatment of others will be tolerated.

Effort: Students should try their best, learning is the primary purpose of school. They should take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow, we are here to help them on that path.

Reminder: If your child was not available for pictures on either 8/7 or 8/8, we have scheduled tomorrow (8/15) with HR Imaging as our picture make-up day. We will be calling students to take their photos in the morning.
