Camp Director

Gales Creek Camp for Children with Type 1 Diabetes is looking for a dynamic, motivated individual to be this year’s Camp Director.

Gales Creek Camp has been providing summer camps for children with type 1 diabetes since 1953. Last year GCC served almost 500 children.

Camp Philosophy: The Gales Creek Camp Foundation is dedicated to providing camp experiences for children, youth and families directly affected by diabetes. We are committed to fostering their transition toward independence by integrating the management of diabetes with social and life skills. Oh, and we like to have a bunch of fun while doing it.

The Camp Director is responsible for implementing all aspects of summer camp.

Basic Duties:

·       Working with the Executive Director to understand and abide by GCC’s mission and goals;

·       Working with the Camp Committee to implement programming;

·       Working with the Medical Director and Medical Committee to ensure the safety of all campers and staff;

·       Hiring camp staff where needed;

·       Training camp staff;

·       Managing camp staff in the 24-hour-a-day operations of the camp;

·       Ensuring all departments (Counseling, Medical, Food Service) are working efficiently together to give campers the best experience possible;

·       Ensuring camp supplies and materials are ordered and maintained;

·       Ensuring all policies and protocols are followed;

·       Welcoming and communicating with camper parents;

·       Coordinating all camp activities, including special guests and events;

·       Assisting in the registration process, including resolving issues during camp.

 

The Camp Director…

·       Is a strong leader and role model for all staff and campers.

·       Is in charge of communications with campers’ parents as well as staff in the office.

·       Remains on-site unless coordinated with both Assistant Camp Director and Executive Director.

·       Facilitates weekly meetings on Sunday nights, awards meetings, and morning meetings with counseling staff.

·       Is always available to meet with staff or campers having problems.

·       Provides support for staff who are dealing with troublesome campers.

·       Maintains a log of when staff travel off-site during their off-time or for scheduled commitments.

·       Opens and closes camp each week, arriving early on Sundays and staying until all others have left on Fridays.

·       Works with staff and campers one-on-one or in groups to resolve problems, discuss issues, create and implement solutions, and follow-up later to assess success or persisting issues.

·       Evaluates counselor performance at the mid-point and end of summer through evaluations and discussing evaluations with counselors one-on-one.

·       Frequently checks in with counselors, nurses, doctors, kitchen staff, and campers to maintain awareness of any problems or concerns.

·       Maintains safety and security at camp by personally greeting and escorting any visitors or guests at camp.

·       Is a fun person to work with!

 

Qualifications:

1.      At least 1 year of experience as a Camp Director; or at least 3 years of experience as a Camp Counselor; or some combination of equivalent experience at similar organizations doing relatable activities.

2.      Must be an independent problem-solver.

3.      Experience and proven ability in managing others.

4.      Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan.

5.      Experience is developing age-appropriate programming for children from ages 5-17.

6.      Minimum age 25, based on ACA policy.

7.      Current CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain prior to the start of camp.

8.      Camp is located in the Coast Range with no access to public transportation. Candidate must have reliable transportation.

 

$600-$780/week depending on experience.

This position is seasonal and ends September 30. (However, Gales Creek Camp will be seeking a permanent, year-around Program Director to hereafter fill these duties and take on other annual duties related to improving the camp. Depending on qualifications and performance, the Camp Director may be considered for the permanent position.)

Room and board is provided during camp weeks.

Start date is flexible, but the ideal candidate will be available immediately, even for limited engagement. Full-time employment may begin as late as mid-June but could be earlier, depending on availability.
