It seems strange but despite the fact we were beaten in this match by more than double scores, we were right in this game up until the dying minutes. A goal deep into injury time, doubled Crookedwoods lead and finished the game as a contest just before the long whistle.
It had all looked a lot different 10 minutes into the second half. We had shaken off a low scoring first half and after Tony O'Keeffe had levelled from a free, Ronan Farrell had given us the lead for the second time in the match with a scrambled goal. We had further chances at this juncture with Ronan Farrell's kicked effort well saved, Tom McHugh mis-controlling when through and James Kilroy's long range effort falling just short. However Crookedwood brought on a substitute to take the frees and he started the fightback with a long range point.
He next provided the score that swung the match. An attack up the right wing by Crookedwood resulted in a centre that caused confusion in our six yard box and ended with a poked effort to the back of the net.
We needed the ball down the other end of the field now but Crookedwood had a grip at centre field and tagged on a couple of crucial points.
Our cause was further weakened when Trevor Farrell was sent to the line for reacting to some aggressive play by the Crookedwood half forward.
With time nearly up Crookedwood dropped a number of men back to protect their goal and when we committed men forward they broke to grab the final goal.
The first half had been a low scoring affair due to the inclement conditions. There was a strong wind blowing straight across the pitch and the pitch itself was very soft due to a lot of rainfall. There was a steady drizzle throughout. We had gone a point up through Ronan Farrell despite Crookedwood having most of the territory. A combination of poor shooting, pressure from the backs and the strong wind resulted in a lot of wides for Crookedwood. We were restricted to a couple of long range efforts from frees which dropped wide.
Eventually Crooked wood scored twice. We then had a great chance before half time to regain the lead. We were awarded a penalty and Tony O'Keeffe was unfortunate to see his well struck effort rebound off the crossbar. The score was 2 points to 1 at half time.
Best on the day for us were Alan Kennedy, who despite struggling with his puckouts at times showed alertness and bravery to divert a number of dangerous situations, Pat Flynn, Adrian Dolphin who both battled hard and Ronan Farrell who got most of our scores.
