Under 8, Friday May 13 v Ballymore

Another great Game for Southern Gaels on a fine Summer's Evening. The ground hurling in particular was excellent this evening and everyone was getting great distance in their strikes and moving the ball fast. It was great to field 2 teams and play a Ballymore team who travelled in great numbers with 26 players. Both games were evenly matched, with Gaels pipping the opposition in one and vice versa in the other.
Thanks to all parents for bringing their kids along and enthusiastically supporting. The panel on the night included: Eoghan west, Conor Hughes, Daithi O'Leochain, Lorcan mc Cormack, Liam O'Flaherty, Cormac Murphy, Ruairí Dolan, Kyle Mahon, Sean Cosgrove, Gearoid McCarthy, Shane Wheatley, Sean and Oisin O Donoghue, Ruairí o Duibhir and Cathal Hardiman. We look forward to upcoming games v Four Roads and Birr and a Trip to Thurles to watch Cork v Waterford.

Academy, May 6 Pairc Chiaráin v Brosna Gaels
First match of 2014 was very exciting. Every player arrived with great enthusiasm and were keen to get into the action despite the damp weather. The visitors did not have as many hurlers as Southern Gaels, so a few were swapped between the teams. It was evident the training was paying off, as all players chased down the sliotar and got some great strikes in. There was great support from the sidelines as each team tried vigorously to get a goal. In summary, it was a great night for Academy Hurling with the following Panel: Dylan McDonnell, Cillian and Liadh Donlon, Dion Marshall,
Cian Cahill, Aaron Hardiman, Tadhg and Ruairí Dolan, Dara Geary, Ciaran West and Conor Flynn.

Under 10 versus Fr Daltons Pairc Chiarain on Friday 16th May
Our U10s took on Fr Daltons from Ballymore in Pairc Chiarain on Friday 16th May. A determined Fr Daltons side made us battle hard for our scores in the first half. Bobby Nugent opened our scoring with a well taken point from the wing before Dano McMonagle added 2 goals and a point after breaking out from a bunch of players and firing the sliothar over the bar, to put some daylight between the teams. Ryan Fallon played first half in goal and had some fine long puckouts.
Calum Devaney was clearing up anything that got into the full forward line and denying goal scoring opportunities to Fr Daltons. Michael Dolan and Johnny Martin and Oisin O Flaherty were tremendous stopping a number of FR Daltons attacks and sending the ball into our forwards. Oisin OFlaherty really stood out making some fabulous blocks and harrying the Fr Daltons midfielders when they had possession to ensure they did not score from those opportunities. A great example to the others on the team. Luke Farrell and Zach Meegan were unlucky not to get on score sheet when some first time pulls missed the target.
In the second half we had make some switches to ensure everyone got to play as much as possible. Luke Whelan came on to play in goal and made some great interceptions leaving his goal to clear the sliothar before the attacker got to it. Alex Devaney had the sliothar is his hand a number of times but was unfortunate not to finish with a score. Paidi OLeochain was introduced to great effect and punished Fr Daltons a number of times getting some fine scores from left and right. Paidis ability to quickly the get the ball into his hand and strike on the run makes him a threat to every team he plays.

Fr Daltons were unlucky on a number of occasions when good work in middle led to some shots that went narrowly wide. Bobby popped up for another fine long distance point to add to his earlier effort. Ryan came back on as to get some outfield time and made some fine clearances. Luke Whelan played full forward for last 5 minutes and scored a fine point after feigning to the right and coming back to the left for a clear shot. He then finished off the match with another 2 goals for Southern Gaels to win on a scoreline of 6-7 to 2-2. A great display all round by all involved.

Next up for our U10s is a visit to Four Roads on Tuesday 20th May for a challenge against their U9s. Our stronger U10s will sit this one out to give our U9s on the team some more game time. Then on Sunday 25th May its off to Thurles for Cork v Waterford in Munster Senior Hurling Championship. We will play Birr at 12.00 on the way to match so a great day out is expected.
Four Roads Under 9s will then make a return visit next Tuesday 27th to Pairc Chiarain.
