Junior team  defeated in second round of the championship
Cullion 1-10 Southern Gaels 0-10
With both teams undefeated coming into this game we were hopeful that a win here would put us into a semi-final. Unfortunately this was not to be as Cullion showed a greater ability to convert their possession into scores and ran out winners by 3 points.
Southern Gaels played with the aid of the wind in the first half. In the very first minute the ball broke in the Southern Gaels square and we were relieved to see the ball narrowly go wide from a good ground shot from the Cullion corner forward.
We had a similar miss moments later when the ball bounced around the Cullion square with a few efforts blocked before a ground shot squirted just wide. After this neither team seemed to settle and a scrappy first half ended all square. Frees from Tony O'Keeffe and a good point from wide on the right by James Kilroy were the only scores we got in the first half. However we started the second half much the brighter with a good point from Adrian Dolphin and 2 from Tom McHugh had us in the lead. The Cullion full forward turned the game at this stage when loose marking allowed him the latitude to strike some good long range points and then flick the ball to the net from close range.
We needed a goal but with Cullion dropping deep we were unable to break them down and now face into a winner takes all clash with Delvin to decide second spot in the group.
Scorers: Anthony O'Keeffe 0-5, Tom Mc Hugh 0-2, James Kilroy 0-1, Sean Carey 0-1, Adrian Dolphin 0-1

Southern Gaels visit local fire station
Last Saturday the 20th of august our nursery players had a surprise for them after training. Instead of their usual warm down they were whisked off to Athlone Fire station.
Here they got a full tour of the station. All the local engines were lined up on display. The kids got to try on helmets and see the insides of all the engines. Many thanks to those who organised this as our younger players got a great kick out of it.
Nursery Fun Hurling Training for all under 6's, continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.30 and Saturday at 3 in Páirc Chiaran. Hurls and Helmets provided. All welcome.

Southern Gaels golf classic
Our golf classic was on this year on Friday the 19th of August in Moate Golf club. The golf classic has been our main fundraising event of the year and we very much appreciate the support that we have gotten for this event. This year was a great success with 28 teams taking part.  Thank you to all who helped organise this and to Moate golf club for hosting the event.
