Southern Gaels re-claim the John Maher Trophy

Dec Finn reclaims John Maher cup

After losing out to the same opposition, Cullion, in last year's decider, Southern Gaels were determined to reclaim the John Maher trophy this year.
This is Southern Gaels own trophy and tournament, and an important part of each year's hurling calender. The Gaels started well, and quite quickly opened up a lead that was never relinquished over the course of the match.
There was some lovely hurling played, with Tommy Murphy and Gavin Daly putting in a very productive afternoon in the forwards.
The backs were hurling well and contained the Cullion forward division pretty well.
Scorers on the day for the Gaels included Tommy Murphy who scored a beauty from the sideline to seal the victory, Tony O'Keeffe, Conor Foley and Gavin Daly.
Afterwards, at a small reception in the clubhouse, captain Tony O'Keeffe graciously accepted the trophy giving due credit to Cullion for the fixture and paying great credit   to the 3 men and the lady who've put in a huge effort into training the adult team this year: Brendan Kehoe, Artie Pyke, Johnny Foley and Vera Corcoran.

Best of luck to the adult team in their upcoming Junior semi-final versus Crookedwood.
Adult training for our Junior team takes place  this week on Monday and  Thursday at 8:00PM in
Pairc Chiaran Athlone.  All are welcome to join in the training.

Nursery Fun Hurling Training for all under 6's, continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.30 and Saturday at 3 in Páirc Chiaran. Hurls and Helmets provided. All welcome.

Under 8 hurling
It's been a busy time for the under 8 hurling team recently.
On the 9th we hosted a stay and play blitz in Pairc Chiaran. Wolfe tones from Longford and Fr.
Daltons from Ballymore provided the opposition. From southern gaels we had 23 players taking part in
the stay and play format games.
U8 team Knockroghery fair 2011
On the 18th we travelled to Knockroghery to take on st. Dominics as part of their Knockroghery Fair celebrations. This was a closely contested game. Playing with the wind in hte first half St. Dominics dominated. Southern Gaels however roared back into the game in the second half. Paidi O'Leaochain, Peter Mulvihill, Dano McMonagleCian Geary and Evan Farrell drove the team on. Liam Ward was amongst the goal scorers again. Michael Dolan bravely shrugged off a bang to the knee to play really well. Most improved on the day was Darragh elliot who was getting great distance pulling on the ball. Afterwards all players were presented with a medal and some refreshments.

Our next county organised blitz  is  on the  23rd of September  Most likely in Cullion but will be confirmed by text. Training continues as usual on Tuesday at 6.30 and Saturday at 3 in Páirc Chiaran. All new members are welcome. Contact Kieran McCarthy at 087-2408701

Under 10  Knockroghery Fair Shield
On the 19th we played St. Dominics for the Knockroghery Fair Shield. This was a very exciting game where the teams were drawing at half time. We scored a goal and a point at the start of the second half only for St. Domincs to come back strongly towards the end. Well done to St. Dominics andhopefully we will be back to contest the shield again next year.
