Southern Gaels 1-11 Wolf Tones 2-9
15/4/2012
Wolf Tones from Longford left with the spoils from Pairc Ciaran Athlone when they took on the home team in this Westmeath Adult league division 3 fixture. The teams had been closely matched all through with Southern Gaels leading for most of the game. Wolf Tones greater goal threat proved decisive in the closing minutes.
Patrick Flynn opened the scoring for Southern Gaels early in the match. This was the only score of the game for nearly ten minutes. When Wolf Tones did draw level Southern Gaels responded with 2 Tony O'Keeffe points. This was followed by a scrambled Ronan Farrell goal to put Southern Gaels in a strong position. Wolf Tones needed a goal to kickstart their challenge and it duly arrived when a long free into the box was expertly batted to the net. This seemed to spur the Longford men on and a series of expertly taken points followed. Southern gaels responded with a Donal duane point after he had been unlucky with a few efforts that had narrowly gone past the posts and a good Frank Kelly effort.
The half time score was level at 1-5 to 1-5.
Southern Gaels began the second half very well. Another long range effort from Donal Duane and 3 from Tony O'Keeffe had Southern Gaels once again in the ascendancy. A couple of Wolf tone points brought them back into it but it didn't look as if it was going to be enough as the Athlone team seemed to have the edge around the middle of the field. However a number of chances went astray and Wolf tones pounced for a goal. This put them 2 up with a few minutes left. Southern gaels responded immmediately with a fabulous Hugh Feeney point. Wolftones came back with another score and Tony OKeeffe knocked over a reply for Southern Gaels. Unfortunately the referee deemed that the sixty minutes were up and there was no time for the equaliser.
Overall it was a really good team performance from Southern Gaels. Wolf Tones perhaps benefitting from their recent run of games in the Tain league seemed to have the extra bite and match sharpness when needed. But on the overall run of play the match could have gone either way in an entertaining and enjoyable game. A pleasing aspect from our point of view was the introduction of new players Jason Ryan, Jonathon Keogh, Christopher Keogh, Hugh Feeney, Killian Coyle, All who got into the game more as the game progressed.

Team: Dermot Whelan, Killian Coyle, Mickey Larkin, Jason Ryan, Brendan Cleary, Trevor Farrell, Ciaran Duncan, Patrick Flynn, Alan Kennedy, Tony O'Keeffe, Donal Duane, Ronan Farrell, David Johnson, Frank Kelly, Hugh Feeney,   Subs Jonathan Keogh, Colman Gantley, Paul Kehoe, Christopher Keogh

U12 league V Ringtown S/G 0-3 Ring town 8-8
Our u12s travelled to Ringtown last Wednesday in their first game of the U12 league with a very inexperienced team. It was the first game for the club for 5 of our players. Ringtown showed much more experience and skill and lead 4-4 to 0-1 at the break. Southern Gaels started well after the break with the move of Conor O Driscoll to midfield but eventually Ringtown got back on top to finish the stronger team. Padraig McDermott had an outstanding game in the backs.  Conor O Driscoll and Stephen Lonergan performed well at mid field and Eoin McCabe also performed well in the backs. Southern Gaels Team: Brian Dolan, Joe Reidy, Padraig McDermott, Ian McCauley, Eoin McCabe, Tommy Seale, Stephen Lonergan, Joe Murtagh, Jack Seale, Keane Seale, Conor O Driscoll and David Murtagh
